Mekonnen Knife plays Vargas in Disney’s ZOMBIES 4: Dawn of the Vampires. He describes the vampire as a loyal, protective friend who tries to keep the group together—and says he aimed to make Vargas both the story’s emotional glue and a source of comic relief.
Who does Mekonnen Knife play in ZOMBIES 4?
Disney’s ZOMBIES 4: Dawn of the Vampires media kit lists Knife as Vargas, a vampire in the fourth film of the franchise. The story follows Zed and Addison on a summer road trip that brings them into the middle of a rivalry between Daywalkers and Vampires. Acting as camp counselors, they join Eliza and Willa in trying to persuade Nova and Victor to unite their communities before a greater threat emerges.
Disney’s synopsis describes the conflict this way: “Tensions flare when Zed and Addison find themselves acting as camp counselors between the two opposing supernatural factions.”
How did Knife approach Vargas?
In an interview with Numéro Netherlands, Knife describes Vargas as “loyal, protective, and always trying to keep the group together, all through a sarcastic remark or a cheeky smile.” He says he wanted the character to balance two functions: serving as emotional glue for the group while also bringing comic relief. His preparation, he says, centered on Vargas’s heart and humor.

That description makes Vargas’s humor part of how he looks after his friends, rather than a separate trait. Knife’s account is his own interpretation of the role; Disney’s official materials establish his casting and the film’s broader premise.
What has Knife said about his background?
The Numéro Netherlands interview describes Knife as an Australian actor. In it, he says: “I was born in Ethiopia, and my parents, who adopted me and my sister when we were babies, co-founded and ran Grace Center in Bahir Dar for the first seven years.” This is Knife’s account of his early family background. Disney’s official materials reviewed for the film identify his role but do not use the label “Australian-Ethiopian.”
How has dance shaped his acting?
Knife says acting came before dance, although he has always loved dancing. He started dance training at age 12, trained extensively, and landed roles in ballet productions. He views dance as another way to tell stories through movement, and says that training has helped his timing, focus, and awareness of how he uses his body in a scene.
