Mehsampur is a hybrid film about a filmmaker’s attempt to make a film about Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. Rather than a conventional biopic or a straightforward documentary, Kabir Singh Chowdhry and Akshay Singh’s work folds reenactments, constructed encounters and documentary elements into a story about the difficulties of representing real people. The film was completed and shown at festivals in 2018; those screenings do not establish where it can legally be watched today.
What is Mehsampur about?
The film follows Devrat, an in-story director who travels to Punjab to meet people connected to Chamkila as he tries to make a film about the singer. Some people appear as themselves, while conversations and reenactments blur the line between memory, performance and invention. The result is not simply a story about Chamkila: it also makes the filmmaker’s methods part of the subject.
Chamkila and singer Amarjot, along with two members of their troupe, were shot dead in Mehsampur on March 8, 1988. The killings remain unsolved in the accounts cited here; explanations for them should be treated as claims or speculation, not established fact. Scroll’s 2018 feature discusses the events and the film’s approach.
Is it a biopic, documentary or mockumentary?
It is best understood as an experimental fiction-documentary hybrid, not as a conventional biopic or a documentary that presents every scene as unmediated fact. The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival catalogue classifies the film as fiction, while its use of real people, documentary situations and reenactments complicates that label. A 2024 Hindustan Times search result describes it as a mockumentary, but that term alone can obscure the film’s broader mix of forms.

The project began as Lal Pari, a planned fictional film about Chamkila. Research in Punjab led Chowdhry and Singh to shift focus: instead of making that film, they made a film about the attempt to make it. Chowdhry described the result as “a critique of the process of ethnography, of biography, of filmmaking,” in his interview with Scroll.
How does the film handle real people and reenactment?
People connected to Chamkila appear as themselves, but the film also uses scripted situations and reenactments. Chowdhry said the participants were non-actors and had a treatment note and script, while their performances remained free-flowing; the filmmakers shaped the material in the edit to convey that it had been manipulated. That deliberate uncertainty asks viewers to consider how a camera, a script and an edit can turn someone’s memory into a scene.

The approach also has limits. Chowdhry said the filmmakers wanted Chamkila’s son, Jaimal, in the film and had written scenes for him, but could not get him to participate, so those scenes were removed. The film is therefore not a complete account of every perspective connected to Chamkila.
Does Mehsampur use Chamkila’s music?
The filmmakers could not afford the rights to Chamkila’s music, so they did not use his music in the film, according to Scroll. This does not mean the film has no music at all; it means Chamkila’s recordings are not part of its soundtrack.

When was it made and shown?
Chowdhry told Scroll that the film was shot in 2015. He described funding problems, periods when he abandoned the project, and further editing after an initial cut. The film made its international debut at Docs Against Gravity in Poland in May 2018. The Scroll feature also reported screenings at Sydney Film Festival from June 6–17 and London Indian Film Festival from June 21–July 1, 2018. The MAMI catalogue lists it as a 2018 film. Scroll’s production and festival account and the 2018 MAMI catalogue document these details.
How long is the film?
Scroll gives the runtime as 98 minutes; the MAMI catalogue lists approximately 99 minutes. These are slightly different source figures, so “about 99 minutes” is the clearest shorthand.

Where can you watch Mehsampur?
The sources establish festival screenings in 2018, not a current streaming, rental, purchase or broadcast option. A UK JustWatch page surfaced without a confirmed provider or playable offer, so it cannot establish present availability. Check current listings from the film’s rights holder or distributor and the catalogs serving your country before relying on a “watch now” listing; availability can vary by territory and change over time.
