Netflix’s recipe makes three 8-inch rounds and layers them with lemon-honey syrup, buttercream and raspberry preserves. The couple’s 2018 wedding cake, created by Claire Ptak, was a different lemon-and-elderflower cake.
What cake does Meghan make on the Netflix show?
Netflix calls the recipe Honey Lemon Layer Cake with Raspberry. It yields three 8-inch cake rounds. The recipe combines honey and lemon in the cake and syrup, then adds raspberry preserves between the layers and fresh raspberries on top.
That flavor combination nods to the couple’s wedding cake, but the ingredients and construction differ. The Netflix recipe uses raspberry preserves and a straightforward buttercream; the wedding cake used lemon curd and elderflower-flavored components.
How to make Netflix’s Honey Lemon Layer Cake
Ingredients and equipment
For the cake rounds, Netflix lists granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, eggs, milk, lemon zest, olive oil and honey. The syrup uses honey, lemon juice, water and lemon zest. The buttercream is made with unsalted butter, powdered sugar and a pinch of salt. For assembly, the recipe calls for raspberry preserves and fresh raspberries; lemon verbena or small basil leaves are optional garnishes.

Prepare three 8-inch cake pans. You will also need a pastry brush to apply the syrup and either a hand blender or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle to make the buttercream. A bread knife is useful for trimming the tops of the cooled cakes. Follow Netflix’s linked recipe for the complete ingredient quantities.
Bake, soak and assemble
- Prepare the three 8-inch pans and divide the batter evenly among them.
- Bake at 350°F for 25–30 minutes, until the cakes are just golden and a toothpick inserted into a cake comes out clean. Cool the cakes completely, then trim their mounded tops.
- Simmer the honey, lemon juice, water and lemon zest to make the syrup; let it cool. Brush syrup over each cake layer.
- Beat the butter, powdered sugar and salt until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Layer the cakes with buttercream and raspberry preserves. Finish with fresh raspberries and, if desired, lemon verbena or small basil leaves.

How it differs from the 2018 wedding cake
Claire Ptak, baker and owner of London’s Violet Bakery, created the couple’s 2018 wedding cake. ITV described it as lemon sponge with elderflower syrup, lemon curd and elderflower Swiss meringue buttercream. Ptak told ITV: “It’s a lemon sponge – a special sponge that I developed just for the couple, and we drizzle the layers with elderflower cordial from the Sandringham estate so it’s really lovely and as local as you can get.”

ITV reported that the wedding cake used 200 Amalfi lemons, 10 bottles of elderflower cordial, 20 kg each of butter, flour and sugar, and 500 organic eggs from Suffolk. Those figures describe the 2018 wedding cake, not quantities for Netflix’s recipe. The cake was served at a lunchtime reception for 600 guests, according to ITV’s report.

What “inspired by the wedding cake” means
The connection is the shared lemon-cake idea, not a shared recipe. Netflix’s home version makes honey and raspberry central, while Ptak’s wedding cake paired lemon with elderflower, lemon curd and elderflower buttercream. Calling the show cake the original wedding-cake recipe would therefore be inaccurate.
