The moment described as Meghan Markle’s “heartfelt gesture” came during a CBS Sunday Morning interview with Prince Harry that aired on August 4, 2024. As Jane Pauley asked Meghan about her past disclosure of thoughts of self-harm, Meghan reportedly placed a hand on Harry’s knee. That detail comes from secondary reporting; the gesture’s meaning should not be treated as established fact.
What interview was the moment from?
It was part of a CBS Sunday Morning segment hosted by Jane Pauley and listed by CBS for August 4, 2024. CBS’s announcement described a conversation about social media, online bullying and the couple’s effort to support families affected by online harm. The CBS video listing says Pauley also spoke with parents involved in a pilot program whose children had died by suicide.
The segment focused on The Parents Network, a program associated with the Archewell Foundation. CBS said it was intended to support parents whose children had been impacted by online harm. Harry spoke about parents needing to act as first responders, while Meghan discussed wanting to protect their young children from online dangers.
What was the gesture, and what did Pauley say?
A People-derived account syndicated by Head Topics described Meghan placing her hand on Harry’s knee as Pauley asked about Meghan’s earlier disclosure of thoughts of self-harm. The account quotes Pauley saying, “I see you touch your husband’s hand in just the way I knew that you would be looking after each other.” The report characterizes the touch as a sign of mutual care, but neither the gesture’s precise intention nor its emotional meaning can be established from that description alone. Head Topics’ syndicated account is the source for this detail; CBS’s summary does not mention it.

Why Meghan said she spoke about painful experiences
Meghan’s own explanation for discussing painful experiences was about openness and helping others—not an explanation of the knee touch. In an ELLE recap of the interview, she said, “When you’ve been through any level of pain or trauma, I believe part of our healing journey—certainly part of mine—is being able to be really open about it.”
She also said that speaking about what she had overcome might encourage someone to check in genuinely on another person rather than assume that everything is fine because they look well. She concluded, “I’ll take a hit for that.” The comments express her stated reason for sharing her experience: she hoped openness could help someone feel seen and prompt others to reach out.

Why the date matters
The word “new” in the original headline refers to the interview when it was reported in August 2024. The segment is not a recent interview: CBS announced it on August 1 and listed it as airing on August 4, 2024. Its subject was online harm and support for affected families, with the reported gesture occurring within that wider conversation.
