What was in Meghan Markle’s original engagement ring?
Harry described the ring’s design in the couple’s first post-engagement interview, broadcast by the BBC in November 2017. He said he designed it, chose yellow gold because it was Meghan’s favorite, and sourced the center diamond from Botswana. The two smaller diamonds on either side came from his mother’s jewelry collection.
Harry explained the personal meaning of the side stones: “The little diamonds on either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.” Meghan said the inclusion of Diana’s stones mattered to her because she had not been able to meet Harry’s mother: “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Diana’s stones] and, obviously, not being able to meet his mom —it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us.” The BBC’s interview coverage and ABC News’ contemporaneous report reproduce the couple’s comments.
Harry’s explanation, republished in TIME’s interview transcript, also states that the main stone came from Botswana and the side diamonds came from his mother’s collection. Contemporary coverage identified Cleave & Company as the maker. The reported details establish the ring’s broad design and stated provenance; they do not establish a reliable carat weight, precise cut, value, or more specific source for Diana’s stones.

What changed in 2019?
When Meghan appeared at Trooping the Colour on June 8, 2019, photographs showed her engagement ring with a slimmer band set with small diamonds. That was visibly different from the original plain, wider yellow-gold band.
In a June 24, 2019 report, British Vogue quoted jeweler Laura Lambert of Fenton & Co describing the apparent work: “The Duchess has reset her ring in a new setting with a thinner, diamond pavé band as opposed to the original band, which was noticeably thicker and plain.” Lambert said the process involved moving the center and accent stones into a new bespoke setting. Vogue quoted her as an expert describing the visible change; it did not establish that she carried out the work.

Vogue also noted a separate diamond eternity band worn at the same appearance. Its presence was reported, but the occasion or person behind that band was not confirmed in the cited coverage.

Later reports have compared photographs and promotional video, pointing to apparent differences in the setting around the center stone and speculating about further alterations. Those image-based observations are not the same as a confirmed account from the couple. Retrospective coverage, including Tatler and Country & Town House, discusses possible later changes while noting the lack of public confirmation.

The available reporting does not establish that the center diamond was replaced or recut, identify a jeweler responsible for any later reset, or settle the number of redesigns. A different-looking ring in an image may prompt speculation, but it is not enough to treat a particular stone shape or setting change as fact.
