The itinerary published by RTVC Noticias listed engagements around preventing violence against children, social equality, social justice and culture, including an expected appearance at Cali’s Petronio Álvarez Festival.
Where the Sussexes were scheduled to go
RTVC Noticias published the itinerary on August 15, 2024. Its schedule divided the four-day visit among the capital, the Caribbean coast and Cali in the southwest:
| Date | Planned location | Announced agenda |
|---|---|---|
| August 15–16, 2024 | Bogotá | Arrival, a meeting with Vice President Francia Márquez, and encounters focused on preventing violence against children and promoting social equality. |
| August 17, 2024 | Cartagena and San Basilio de Palenque | Planned activities focused on social justice and culture. |
| August 18, 2024 | Cali | Expected attendance at the 28th Petronio Álvarez Festival; RTVC described this as the visit’s final day. |
These were announced plans, not a record of every activity ultimately completed. The itinerary’s themes and expected appearances should be understood in that context.
Why Vice President Francia Márquez invited them
RTVC reported Márquez’s account that she had first invited Meghan to a July 25 event recognizing Afro-descendant women and their contributions. Meghan could not attend that event, Márquez said, and her office then worked to arrange a visit to Colombia. She described the effort as taking a year.

According to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s account, the conversation touched on her vision for Colombia, mental health and preventing online harms. The office also noted that the welcome included pan de bono, Colombian cheese bread.
What the visit was intended to connect
The agenda brought together social issues and cultural programming: preventing violence against children, social equality and justice, and local culture. In its post-visit account, as reported by Noticias RCN, Colombia’s Ministry of Equality and Equity said the visit helped create connections between local populations and the Archewell Foundation for work involving women’s economic autonomy, preventing digital violence against children and young people, and supporting cultural and artistic leaders. That description is the ministry’s characterization of the visit’s outcomes.

Noticias RCN reported that the Ministry of Equality and Equity said Harry and Meghan paid their own travel expenses and those of their staff. The ministry also said events received support from international cooperation and philanthropic resources, while public institutions covered specified operational needs.
- The ministry said it took responsibility for certain technical requirements and mobility, as well as participation by young people, women and communities.
- The government covered some transport between cities and meals at certain events, according to the ministry’s account.
This is the ministry’s reported accounting, not an independent audit of all visit expenses. The ministry also rejected rumors that Colombia paid a total of 8 billion pesos, bought Meghan’s outfits from Colombian designers for the trip, or contracted a 3,000-person security force. RCN reported the ministry’s explanation that the outfits already belonged to her; the claimed total and security figure should not be treated as established costs.
