Meghan Markle and Prince Harry arrived in Bogotá on August 15, 2024, where Colombia’s Vice President Francia Márquez welcomed them. Their four-day visit included planned engagements in Bogotá, Cartagena and Cali, with attention to online harms, mental health and social issues.

Who did Harry and Meghan meet in Colombia?

Márquez welcomed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in Bogotá and hosted them for a formal audience at her official residence. In the couple’s own account, the conversation touched on mental health and preventing online harms; that description comes from their office, not an independently published transcript. The Sussexes’ account of the welcome also named Márquez’s partner, Rafael Yerney Pinillo.

Why did they visit Colombia?

Márquez framed the visit as a chance to draw attention to cyberbullying, violence in digital settings and discrimination. She said the aim was to build connections and contribute to efforts to address those concerns. The visit also included discussion of mental health and broader social issues.

In remarks reported by El Tiempo, Márquez said that watching the Netflix series about the couple had moved her and motivated her to invite Meghan to Colombia. She described Meghan as a woman whose story deserved to be heard and said the exchange could strengthen women. This was Márquez’s explanation for the invitation, not a statement from the Sussexes about why they accepted it. El Tiempo’s account of Márquez’s remarks and the visit.

What was on the itinerary?

The visit was expected to last four days, from August 15 to 18, 2024. Contemporaneous coverage described planned stops in three cities and engagements with different groups:

City Planned focus
Bogotá Opening welcome and meetings, including the audience with Márquez
Cartagena Part of the visit’s planned public engagements
Cali Part of the visit’s planned public engagements

The announced audiences included young people, women, social leaders and communities. These broad plans do not establish that each group took part in every city or that every event had the same focus. EL PAÍS’s account of the planned itinerary.

Was it an official state visit?

The sources describe a visit following an invitation from Colombia’s vice president, with public-facing events and meetings. They do not establish that Harry and Meghan represented the British government or were on a British government-mandated state visit. Calling it a tour or visit describes the trip; it should not be read as a claim about diplomatic status.
