The video also evokes Tekken and Scott Pilgrim, though some character-by-character comparisons are interpretations rather than confirmed creative intent.
What games and series are referenced in the “BOA” video?
TIME’s May 10, 2024 coverage and GRAMMY’s video coverage describe a mix of anime, fighting-game and rhythm-game imagery. GRAMMY calls out Scott Pilgrim, One Piece, Dance Dance Revolution and iconic 3D fighting games such as Mortal Kombat, along with Gantz-inspired outfits. These are reported pop-culture references, not evidence that the franchises officially endorsed the video.
| Reference | What viewers see or how the coverage describes it | How firmly the connection is established |
|---|---|---|
| One Piece | TIME connects Megan’s hair and serpent imagery with Boa Hancock, the series character. | A reported homage; detailed outfit comparisons are TIME’s interpretation. |
| Dance Dance Revolution | A substantial dance-floor sequence with neon visuals and arrows. | Described as a visual nod to DDR, not as licensed game footage. |
| Mortal Kombat | Fighting-game imagery; TIME notes possible styling similarities to Mileena. | The game reference is reported, while a specific Mileena outfit connection is a possibility, not confirmed intent. |
| Tekken | TIME notes an apparent resemblance to Christie Monteiro. | A visual reading; other character parallels are presented as fan speculation. |
| Scott Pilgrim | Game-like fighting presentation and visual energy. | Named as a reference by both TIME and GRAMMY. |
Is Megan dressed as Boa Hancock in “BOA”?
TIME associates the video’s serpent imagery and Megan’s long-and-short hairstyle with Boa Hancock from One Piece. That makes the character a useful lens for reading the video, but it does not establish that every costume detail is a direct recreation or that Megan is wearing an official Boa Hancock cosplay.
TIME also compares some styling to Mileena from Mortal Kombat and notes a look that appears inspired by Christie Monteiro from Tekken. Those are visual comparisons, not confirmed statements from Megan or the production team about their intentions. The distinction matters: a recognizable resemblance can be part of the viewer’s experience without proving a one-to-one costume reference.

Why the DDR sequence stands out
The dance-floor passage is described by TIME as a substantial Dance Dance Revolution reference. Neon floor design and directional arrows make the rhythm-game connection legible even to viewers who do not recognize the other anime and fighting-game callbacks.
The available coverage supports calling it a visual homage. It does not establish that the video uses licensed footage, reproduces a particular DDR game version, or reflects a licensing arrangement.

How the video turns pop culture into a game-like world
The references work across different media rather than pointing to just one franchise. Boa Hancock supplies the anime-and-manga connection; the fighting-game imagery draws on series such as Mortal Kombat and Tekken; DDR contributes a rhythm-game setting; and Scott Pilgrim adds another game-inflected frame of reference.
TIME also mentions viewers noticing possible echoes of Space Channel 5 and a SpongeBob meme comparison. Those are observations circulating online, not central references established in the same way as the titles named by TIME and GRAMMY.

The song’s sample and “The Curse of Thee Serpent Woman”
“BOA” samples Gwen Stefani’s 2004 single “What You Waiting For?”, according to Pitchfork and TIME. Pitchfork also describes Megan as the protagonist of a game called “The Curse of Thee Serpent Woman,” a framing that fits the video’s game-like imagery.
