Megalopolis is a futuristic fable about an architect trying to remake New York—and a film whose enormous ambitions are inseparable from its uneven storytelling. Francis Ford Coppola’s 2024 project can be exhilaratingly strange or frustratingly overstuffed, depending on how much you want its images and ideas to roam beyond conventional narrative. It is best approached as an audacious artistic experiment, not a tightly plotted civic drama.
What is Megalopolis about?
Set in a futuristic version of New York recast with Roman names and imagery, the film follows architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), who imagines transforming the city. His vision collides with entrenched political power. The result is a fable about who gets to shape a city and what kind of future its people should share, rather than a realistic account of urban planning.

Coppola premiered the film in competition at Cannes on May 16, 2024, after developing and financing the long-held project himself. The Associated Press described its central idea as an architect seeking a more harmonious metropolis, while the Festival de Cannes presented it as a visionary, humanist tale. Those descriptions establish the aspiration; the film still has to make that aspiration convincing on screen. Associated Press · Festival de Cannes
Does the film’s ambition work?
A civic ideal at monumental scale
Coppola has described the project in explicitly humanist terms. After the Cannes screening, he said, “We are one human family and that’s who we should pledge our allegiance to,” as reported by the Associated Press. The film invites viewers to weigh that ideal against political resistance and the competing visions of its characters. But a director’s stated intention is not the same as an emotional achievement: the relevant question is whether the film makes its hopes for the city and its people feel persuasive rather than merely grand. Experiment instead of smooth momentum
Megalopolis asks its audience to accept a mix of classical references, speculative urban imagery and conspicuous formal invention. That freedom is part of its appeal, but it can also make the story feel crowded or hard to follow. The critical divide captures the trade-off: a Guardian roundup in May 2024 set “bafflingly shallow” against “staggeringly ambitious,” while Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus calls it “More of a creative manifesto than a cogent narrative feature” and “equal parts stimulating and slapdash.” These are attributed critical characterizations, not a verdict supplied by an aggregate score. The Guardian · Rotten Tomatoes
Whether that imbalance feels invigorating or exasperating is the central question for a viewer. If you prize a clear, steadily advancing plot, the film’s digressions and conceptual density may be obstacles. If you enjoy cinema that risks awkwardness in pursuit of a distinctive vision, its excess can be part of the experience rather than a reason to dismiss it.

Is Megalopolis worth watching?
It is worth seeking out if you are curious about a major filmmaker making a personal, unconventional work and are willing to meet it on its own terms. It is a less reliable choice if you want a coherent, accessible story to carry every political and visual idea. The most useful expectation is neither “masterpiece” nor “failure”: this is a divisive experiment whose imaginative reach and narrative control are in tension.
The film’s commercial context is notable but should not be mistaken for a measure of its artistic success. The Associated Press reported in 2024 that Coppola put $120 million of his own money into the production; that is reported project financing, not an independently verified audited production cost. AP later reported an approximately $4 million North American opening weekend in September 2024. That is an opening-weekend figure, not the film’s lifetime gross. Associated Press · Associated Press

Where can you watch or buy Megalopolis?
Availability depends on country and changes as theatrical, digital and physical-media rights shift. No authoritative current country-by-country streaming listing is established here, so check local cinema listings and your region’s digital rental or purchase stores rather than relying on an old streaming-service listing.
Physical editions vary by territory
Home-video reports identify UK DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD editions, as well as an Italian release. The Digital Bits reported in March 2025 that no North American Lionsgate physical release was planned at that time and warned that the Blu-ray discs in the UK and Italian editions were Region B. That report describes the status then; it does not establish current stock or rule out later changes. Check the seller’s current listing, region compatibility, audio and subtitle languages before ordering an import. The Digital Bits · Film Stories

Shochiku announced a Japanese Blu-ray for December 24, 2025. Its September 26, 2025 announcement described about 47 minutes of extras and a 28-page booklet. The announcement establishes the planned Japanese edition, not its current stock status or whether its language and disc format suit a particular buyer. Shochiku via PR Times

In August 2024, Lionsgate withdrew a promotional trailer after quotations attributed to critics about Coppola’s earlier films were found to be false or misattributed. The Guardian reported that a Lionsgate spokesperson responded, “We screwed up.” The episode is a reason to distinguish verifiable statements from promotional material when discussing the film’s reception; the withdrawn trailer’s quotations should not be repeated as genuine reviews.
