The image appeared within Projecting Change, an environmental-awareness presentation associated with filmmaker Louie Psihoyos and Obscura Digital—not as a newly staged Diwali display.
Who brought the Kali image to the Empire State Building?
The company was Obscura Digital. The Indian Express described the larger Projecting Change presentation as a collaboration between filmmaker Louie Psihoyos and San Francisco-based Obscura Digital. Artist Android Jones designed the Kali portrait. These were distinct roles: Psihoyos was the filmmaker associated with the project, Obscura Digital handled the projection, and Jones created the artwork. (The Indian Express, August 12, 2015; Scroll, August 17, 2015)
What was Projecting Change?
Projecting Change used the Empire State Building as a canvas for images of endangered animals. The Kali portrait appeared a few days after the animal imagery, as part of the same broader presentation. The Indian Express and Scroll connect the work to raising awareness of extinction, pollution, and human effects on nature. In that project context, the image was framed as an environmental statement; that framing should not be mistaken for a universal interpretation of Kali in Hindu belief. (The Indian Express; Scroll)
How large was the projection?
Scroll’s 2015 report said Obscura used 40 projectors stacked on a nearby building and described them as 20,000-lumen projectors. The same report said the projectors used for the animal imagery and Kali projection cost more than $1 million. These are figures reported by Scroll, not an independently verified total project budget. The available reporting does not establish an audience count or a measured conservation impact.
