Su Venkatesan’s Tamil novel Veera Yuga Nayagan Velpari had passed 100 instalments in the Tamil weekly Ananda Vikatan by the time Scroll.in interviewed him on 8 December 2018. Venkatesan describes it as fiction shaped by Sangam literature and historical material—not a factual history of the ancient Tamil ruler Pari. The interview explores how he reimagined Pari, what he says went into the novel, and why he sees its conflict as relevant beyond its historical setting.
What is Velpari about?
Veera Yuga Nayagan Velpari, often called Velpari, is Su Venkatesan’s Tamil historical-fiction novel centred on Pari, a ruler associated in popular memory with giving his chariot to support a jasmine creeper. Venkatesan’s portrayal goes beyond that familiar anecdote: he presents Pari as valiant, kind, knowledgeable, and a leader of the Velir, resisting the power of the Chera, Chola, and Pandya kingdoms. Scroll.in’s 2018 interview describes the novel as offering an alternative view of parts of Tamil history; its portrait of Pari remains a literary one, not an independently verified historical account. How many instalments did the serial run?
When Scroll.in published its interview on 8 December 2018, the Ananda Vikatan serialization had ended after more than 100 instalments. Venkatesan separately described its run as more than one hundred weeks. Those are two different measures; the interview does not establish an exact instalment total, so a figure such as 111 should not be inferred from the milestone.
Is Velpari history or fiction?
Venkatesan’s answer is explicit: “I have woven all these historical aspects together to bring Pari alive, and yet my Velpari is a work of fiction.” He says the novel draws on Sangam literature and historical aspects he studied, but the result is an imaginative reconstruction. Readers interested in the period can treat the book as historical fiction, not as a reference work or proof that every character, episode, or detail happened as depicted.

What research did Venkatesan describe?
Sangam literature and the western hills
Venkatesan contrasted Velpari with his earlier novel Kaaval Kottam, which he said drew on government archives for its colonial-period subject. In the interview, he said Velpari was “based purely on Sangam literature” and described traveling into the lives of tribal people on the western hills. These are accounts of his creative process, rather than independent verification of the novel’s historical details.
Warfare and everyday detail
For the battle sequences, Venkatesan said he read extensively about weapons, preparations for war, and martial arts, while noting that documentation on Tamil martial arts was limited. He also wanted to incorporate details he found striking in Sangam literature, including references to betel leaves, birds, love, and valour.
Why does the story matter to the author now?
Venkatesan connects Pari’s story to a recurring tension between nature and human greed, as well as the politics of exploitation. He put it this way in the interview: “Velpari is the original form of conflict between nature and human greed that Tamil society keeps witnessing over and over again in various periods.” That is the novelist’s interpretation of the book’s contemporary meaning, not a neutral historical conclusion.
He also reflected on the novel’s reception and the experience of serialized reading: “People talk of the digital age and the need to keep it short. But the success of Velpari has reaffirmed my faith that literature can only be an elevating experience.” The interview records his view; it does not give an audited sales total, readership survey, or current audience figure.
