But the “$50 million” in this headline is not an established current net-worth figure: the clearest documented financial number is Forbes’ estimate that he earned $30 million in 2017 from music and touring. That is one year’s earnings, not a calculation of his wealth today.
Who is Skrillex?
Sonny John Moore was born in Los Angeles on January 15, 1988. He performs as Skrillex and became widely known for electronic music that moved between dance, bass, and pop collaborations. The Recording Academy’s profile records nine Grammy wins and twenty nominations as viewed in 2026; awards totals can change over time. The Academy’s artist profile also documents several of the career milestones behind that recognition.
Breakthrough releases and recognition
The Recording Academy notes that Bangarang reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200, that his debut full-length album Recess peaked at No. 4, and that “Where Are Ü Now,” made with Diplo and Justin Bieber, became his first Top 10 hit. His early Grammy wins included Best Dance/Electronica Album for Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites in the 2011 award year. The Academy’s current profile also lists a win for “Rumble” and a 2024 award-year nomination for Quest For Fire.
What does the $50 million figure mean?
The headline’s $50 million figure should be treated as a claim, not a verified valuation. The financial evidence available does not establish that Skrillex’s current net worth is $50 million, nor does it disclose a reliable method for calculating a current net-worth figure.

What is documented
Forbes placed Skrillex at No. 4 on its highest-paid-DJs list and estimated his 2017 earnings at $30 million, identifying music and touring as the sources. The Recording Academy later reported the same figure in a retrospective about Forbes’ list. These are references to the same dated annual earnings estimate, not independent net-worth calculations. Forbes’ 2017 list is the primary source for the earnings figure.
Annual earnings measure money attributed to a particular year; net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities at a point in time. Neither the 2017 figure nor the available career milestones establish Skrillex’s lifetime income or present-day wealth. A more precise conclusion is that a widely circulated $50 million net-worth claim is unverified by the available evidence.

How Skrillex has described his creative approach
Skrillex’s comments about his work offer context for the artist behind the earnings headline, but they are not financial disclosures. In a historical Pitchfork interview about creative decisions and opportunities for money, he said, “Every decision I make, I want to feel honest about.” The interview captures his view at that time, rather than necessarily describing his current thinking.
The Recording Academy’s artist bio quotes him saying, “I don’t like hype cluttering art.” In a Forbes profile, he once described a stripped-down way of performing: “I’ve got a USB stick and [turntables], and there’s no production cost,” followed by, “But you throw a great party and people have the best time.” That anecdote illustrates how he talked about a particular performance setup; it is not evidence of his overall touring costs or income.

Why the earnings number cannot answer the net-worth question
- Different measures: $30 million is a reported estimate of earnings during 2017. Net worth concerns accumulated assets and liabilities, which the earnings figure does not show.
- Different time frames: A single year from 2017 cannot establish current wealth in 2026.
- Limited basis: Forbes names music and touring as the sources for its estimate, but that does not disclose a complete accounting of taxes, expenses, investments, debts, or other assets.
- Claim status: The evidence reviewed does not verify the $50 million figure or provide a transparent current valuation method.
What the number does—and does not—tell fans
The figure helps explain why Skrillex is often discussed among commercially successful DJs, but it should not be mistaken for a balance-sheet estimate. His charting releases, collaborations, and awards are documented aspects of his career; the $50 million net-worth claim is not established on the same footing. The most defensible account keeps the two separate: a historical $30 million annual earnings estimate for 2017, and no verified current net-worth figure in the evidence cited here.
