Patrick Fernandes, widely known as Padre Patrick, is a Brazilian Catholic priest whose humorous, conversational videos grew into a major online presence. His Instagram audience rose from 500,000 in early July 2021 to more than one million later that month, according to Gshow. The growth reflects more than a striking follower count: academic studies describe a mix of platform-native content, approachable interaction and visibility across social and traditional media. It does not, by itself, establish the religious or personal impact of his videos.
Who is Padre Patrick?
Fernandes is a Catholic priest associated with Parauapebas, in the Brazilian state of Pará. A May 2025 profile by Folha de S.Paulo reported that he led a parish there and had been ordained in Marabá, also in Pará. The same profile described a public career that now extends beyond social media, including appearances in the national debate on online betting and a live show.
His online persona pairs religious themes with a casual, comic style. In a 2021 interview quoted by Gshow, he described his purpose as: “Meu propósito é propagar o evangelho de forma leve e com uma linguagem mais popular”. The line is his stated aim as reported by Gshow, not an independently verified institutional mission statement.
How did he become famous online?
A rapid rise on Instagram
Gshow reported that Fernandes had 500,000 Instagram followers on July 4, 2021, and passed one million by July 27. A 2024 peer-reviewed case study by Moisés Sbardelotto describes the broader burst as a move from a few thousand followers to millions over several months in 2021. Those accounts establish a rapid rise, but not a single post or event as its cause.

Humor that leaves room for religious substance
Fernandes’s humor gives religious messages an accessible, conversational entry point. In an August 2025 UOL feature, he reflected that he had initially worried people might see him as a caricature or comedian. He said audience members’ accounts of finding help in difficult moments through his videos changed how he understood that humor.

His emphasis on balance captures the distinction he draws between humor as a way to reach people and the spiritual meaning he hopes to offer: “Encontrar o equilíbrio, acho que é o caminho mais sadio”. These are Fernandes’s reflections as reported by UOL, not proof of a measured effect on viewers.
Interaction and a multiplatform presence
Sbardelotto’s 2024 study examines Fernandes on Instagram and YouTube through four dimensions: person or persona, performance, content and interaction. A separate 2024 study in Novos Olhares analyzes his media visibility through multiplatform content, intimacy and proximity, traditional media and celebrity value, and the decentralization of religious communication.

Taken together, these analyses help explain why the story is broader than a viral account. A recognizable persona and direct-feeling interaction can travel through social platforms, while wider media coverage brings the figure to people who may not follow his religious content. The studies offer frameworks for understanding visibility; they do not establish that online reach is equivalent to religious influence.

From social media to national visibility
In May 2025, Folha reported that Fernandes appeared before Brazil’s CPI das Bets, a parliamentary inquiry into online betting, after posting an offer to help combat betting addiction. At the hearing, he invoked the Book of Revelation: “Como diz o Livro do Apocalipse: ou tu és quente ou és frio; se fores morno, estou prestes a te vomitar.” Folha also described how his remarks and online responses could generate memes and reach audiences beyond Catholic social-media circles.
That profile also reported his live show, Bença, Padre. These are dated details from May 2025; the source does not establish a current show schedule or ticket availability.
What his story does—and does not—show
Fernandes is a useful case study in how a religious figure can communicate through social platforms without relying on formal institutional channels alone. His rapid Instagram growth, humor, interaction, YouTube presence and broader media visibility are documented across reporting and academic analysis. What cannot be inferred from follower totals is how many viewers changed their beliefs, received lasting help or engaged more deeply with religion. UOL’s account of audience testimonials records individual experiences, not population-level outcome data.
