The contestant described as Naked and Afraid’s first double amputee is Mandy Horvath. The phrase “I have died three times and came back from that” is Horvath’s own account, quoted in coverage of the show’s 2025 season 18 announcement.
Who is Mandy Horvath?
Horvath was announced as a contestant for season 18 of Naked and Afraid. The Independent and Extra described her as the show’s first double amputee contestant. That distinction is specific to Naked and Afraid; it should not be read as a claim about every survival television series.

In the season preview, Horvath said, “I have died three times and came back from that.” Extra reported her explanation that she was struck by a locomotive, which severed her limbs. These accounts are attributed to Horvath in the published coverage; the articles do not offer independent medical documentation of the accident or her statement about dying.
What was her challenge on the show?
The season 18 announcement paired Horvath with a partner named Johnny for a planned 21-day challenge in Belize. The reports described a remote jungle and dense rainforest, with heavy rain, mosquitoes and toxic plants among the expected hazards. Promotional coverage called the challenge the “Everest” of survival challenges; that is show-related framing, not an objective ranking.

Extra also quoted Horvath saying, “Now this 21-day challenge is my Everest.”
What has Horvath said about life after her accident?
Horvath’s statements in the coverage focused on perseverance. The Independent quoted her saying, “There is life after the unimaginable,” and reported her motto as, “Tell me that I can’t and I will show you that I can.” Those are her words as presented in the articles, not independently verified descriptions of her medical history.
What outdoor achievements have been reported?
The Independent and Extra reported that Horvath became the first female bilateral amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Extra also reported that she climbed the Manitou Incline in Colorado Springs. These are achievements attributed to Horvath by the outlets; their reports do not provide independent verification of the records.
