Katie Grimes was 15 when she made her Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games, held in 2021. She finished fourth in the women’s 800m freestyle. Three years later, at age 18, she won Olympic silver in the women’s 400m individual medley at Paris 2024.
Who is Katie Grimes?
Katie Grimes is an American swimmer whose Olympic career has included both pool and open-water events. Born January 8, 2006, she was 15 at her first Olympics in Tokyo and 18 at the Paris 2024 Games. She is a two-time Olympian, representing the United States at both.
Her career crosses different kinds of swimming: distance freestyle and the individual medley in the pool, as well as 10km open water. World Aquatics’ results profile records her Paris 2024 participation in the open-water event alongside her pool results.
What happened at her Olympic debut in Tokyo?
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics took place in 2021 after postponement. Grimes competed in the women’s 800m freestyle at age 15 and finished fourth, narrowly missing an Olympic medal. Her result is recorded by World Aquatics and in USA Swimming’s 2024 Olympic Games Media Guide.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That fourth place is the reason headlines describe her as a 15-year-old Olympian: it refers to her age at her Tokyo debut, not her age today.
How did her Olympic results differ in Paris?
| Games | Age at competition | Event | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo 2020, held in 2021 | 15 | Women’s 800m freestyle | Fourth place |
| Paris 2024 | 18 | Women’s 400m individual medley | Silver medal |
The results are in different events, so the change from fourth to silver is not a same-event performance comparison. At Paris, Grimes also took part in the 10km open-water event; her Olympic medal came in the pool’s 400m individual medley. World Aquatics lists the silver in its medal record as earned on July 29, 2024.

What did she achieve between the Olympics?
Grimes also earned medals at the World Championships. USA Swimming’s 2024 guide lists silver in the 1500m freestyle and 400m individual medley at the 2022 World Championships, followed by silver in the 400m individual medley at the 2023 World Championships. These are world-championship results, distinct from her Olympic silver in Paris.
The range of events helps explain why her résumé does not fit a single-event label: her documented results include long-distance freestyle, individual medley and open-water competition.
