Jeff Gutt was announced as Stone Temple Pilots’ new lead singer in November 2017. He was not the first singer to front the band after Scott Weiland: Chester Bennington had an earlier role, and the band’s 2013 legal complaint said it was moving forward with Bennington. Gutt’s appointment came later, after a search for a vocalist who could perform the group’s older songs and help write new ones.
Who replaced Scott Weiland in Stone Temple Pilots?
Stone Temple Pilots announced Jeff Gutt as its new lead singer on November 15, 2017, after welcoming him onstage at the Troubadour in Los Angeles the night before. The announcement came from Rhino, the band’s label. Rhino’s announcement described Gutt as a veteran of Detroit’s music scene who had spent the previous year writing and recording with founding members Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, and Eric Kretz.
The chronology matters: Chester Bennington was an earlier post-Weiland singer. A 2013 complaint filed by the band said it was moving forward with Bennington; that is a statement in a party’s legal filing, not a complete account of his tenure. Gutt was announced as the new lead singer in 2017. These are distinct points in the band’s post-Weiland history, not simultaneous appointments. The 2013 complaint and Rhino’s later announcement document those separate moments.
How did Jeff Gutt get the job?
The DeLeo brothers and Kretz launched a worldwide search for a singer who could write, record, and tour with them. According to the band’s 2017 account, it reviewed about 15,000 online submissions, then invited more than 30 singers to audition in person at Studio 606 in Los Angeles. Gutt auditioned on the final day.

Gutt had not sent music through the online submission process. Robert DeLeo said he heard about him after playing a Detroit show with the Hollywood Vampires. The band’s account therefore describes a large open search, but Gutt entered the process through a personal recommendation rather than an online application.
Why did the band choose him?
The members said they wanted a singer who could handle the earlier material while helping create a new direction. Dean DeLeo explained that balance this way: “We wanted someone who would not only do our earlier songs justice, but would also write new songs and carve out a different path forward with us. It took some time, but we found our guy.”

Robert DeLeo singled out Gutt’s range on demanding songs such as “Piece of Pie” and “Interstate Love Song,” as well as his feel for melody and songwriting. Drummer Eric Kretz said the group finished 14 songs during the writing period with Gutt. Those descriptions and figures are the band members’ own account of the process, not an independent assessment of Gutt’s vocals or a separately verified tally.

Gutt acknowledged that he could not replace Weiland’s singular presence. In Rhino’s announcement, he said: “No one will ever fill Scott’s shoes and I’m not trying to – he’s a legend. But these songs deserve to be performed and people want to hear them. I’m just honored that the guys chose me to help them continue to build this band’s legacy.”
