How did the family work together on The Piano Lesson?
The 2024 film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play brought several Washington family members into one production, in different roles: Denzel produced, Malcolm directed and co-wrote, Katia executive produced, and John David starred. Pauletta and Olivia also acted in the film. The credits make the project a useful snapshot of the siblings’ different professional paths, rather than a single shared career.
Malcolm has described the appeal of the adaptation as exploring the range in Wilson’s work and interpreting it for film. Olivia has also spoken about receiving acting advice from her parents; in a Good Morning America interview quoted by ABC News, she said their criticism and support offered “a good balance.”
What has Denzel Washington said about his children?
In a 2010 interview with The Guardian, Denzel said: “I have four children: the eldest is a professional footballer; Katia, my eldest daughter, has just graduated from Yale law school. They’ve all gone to college.” That is a statement from 2010, not a current account of his children’s education or work. ABC News’s 2025 profile identifies John David’s earlier football career and his later move into acting.
