You can use MediaMTX on a Raspberry Pi to send a camera or another supported video source to YouTube Live: MediaMTX takes the local feed, then forwards it to the YouTube stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room. That creates a live-streaming workflow, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Power, network, source, and platform interruptions still need to be planned for and tested.

How the Raspberry Pi, MediaMTX, and YouTube fit together

MediaMTX is a live media server and proxy: it routes streams between protocols and can forward, record, and replay them. In this setup, the Pi supplies video to MediaMTX, and MediaMTX relays it to YouTube. For a supported Raspberry Pi camera, the documented built-in source is rpiCamera; a path named cam makes the local stream available at /cam. Other publishing sources can be used, too, provided they produce a stream MediaMTX can accept.

The signal path is:

  1. Capture or publish: a Pi camera or another supported source supplies video to the Pi.
  2. Receive and route: MediaMTX reads the source and makes it available on a configured path.
  3. Forward: MediaMTX sends the stream to the current YouTube ingest URL using the stream key from Live Control Room.
  4. Monitor: YouTube reports stream health; you should also check MediaMTX logs and verify your own restart and recovery behavior.

MediaMTX’s introduction describes its role as a media router focused on efficiency and portability. See the MediaMTX introduction and its Raspberry Pi camera guide.

Check Raspberry Pi and camera compatibility

The MediaMTX camera guide lists Raspberry Pi OS Trixie and Bookworm, in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Choose the MediaMTX build for the OS architecture; the guide specifies arm64 for a 64-bit OS. It also documents a Raspberry Pi Docker image tagged 1-rpi, with additional privileges and device configuration needed for camera access.

Do not assume every camera is plug-and-play. The guide notes that some cameras, including certain ArduCam models, need a custom libcamera and cannot use the precompiled binaries or images; those cases require compiling MediaMTX from source. Confirm compatibility for your exact Pi board, OS, camera, and connector before building around it.

Use the built-in camera source

For a supported native Raspberry Pi camera, preserve the example configuration when setting up MediaMTX and configure a path with source: rpiCamera. A minimal path conceptually looks like this:

In the camera guide’s configuration, resolution, camera mode, and bitrate can be adjusted to suit the camera and the upload connection. The guide also describes feeding MediaMTX from the external rpicam-vid utility instead, which can be useful when you need that separate camera-capture workflow.

Configure MediaMTX to forward to YouTube

  1. Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and copy the Stream URL and stream key. YouTube says the RTMPS URL is revealed from the Stream URL field; the key is available in the same control room. Interface wording may change, so follow the current labels there.
  2. Prefer RTMPS when available. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, encrypting the feed in transit. Use the exact current server URL YouTube shows rather than copying a hostname from an old example. YouTube’s guidance recommends RTMPS; see YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its RTMPS instructions.
  3. Add the destination to MediaMTX. MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding guide documents a forward destination with the stream key following the URL after a #. Follow the syntax in the current MediaMTX YouTube forwarding guide, substituting your own current URL and key. Treat its sample endpoint as an example, not a permanent YouTube address.
  4. Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in a publicly accessible configuration. If it is disclosed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the MediaMTX destination.
  5. Start the source and confirm YouTube receives it. Check MediaMTX’s logs for connection or forwarding errors and inspect YouTube’s stream health before relying on the stream.

If YouTube reports an SSL error, its RTMPS help advises checking both the protocol and server address, and suggests trying port 443 when appropriate. Do not copy a certificate fingerprint from an older example as a universal setting: certificate details can change.

Make sure the outgoing stream includes audio

MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding instructions warn that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Before you go live, confirm that the outgoing feed contains both video and audio, even if your intended program is mostly visual.

If the camera or publishing source does not provide audio, MediaMTX’s Raspberry Pi camera guide documents a separate USB-microphone workflow using GStreamer and ALSA utilities. See the audio section of the Pi camera guide for the documented pipeline. A USB microphone is only needed when you require a separate audio input; verify the resulting stream rather than assuming the microphone is being sent.

Choose settings YouTube can receive reliably

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Codec and resolution affect bitrate recommendations. The H.264 ranges below are YouTube’s published recommendations accessed on October 3, 2026; they are not a measured bandwidth requirement for a particular Pi or MediaMTX configuration.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate range
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6–17 Mbps
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

These are recommendations, not a reason to choose the top of a range automatically. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and selecting a quality that is reliable on the available connection. Test with representative motion and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during transmission. Start with a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your complete source-to-YouTube path can sustain.

Plan for continuous operation without assuming unlimited uptime

A stream that starts successfully is not automatically a stream that will remain live indefinitely. The official setup material documents the workflow but does not establish a maximum duration for this exact configuration, guarantee 24/7 uptime, or promise that YouTube will never require a reconnect or restart. Do not assume the full broadcast will be archived. Check current YouTube stream-management behavior and policy for your account and use case.

For a long-running installation, check the whole chain rather than just MediaMTX:

  • Power: keep the Pi and camera on stable power, and decide how the device will restart after an outage.
  • Network: test sustained upload capacity, packet stability, and what happens when the router or internet connection drops.
  • Heat and placement: provide suitable ventilation and monitor the Pi under the load of your actual camera mode and stream. The cited guides do not establish a thermal limit or measured Pi load for your configuration.
  • Startup and recovery: configure your chosen service or container to start after reboot, then test power loss, source interruption, and network recovery. MediaMTX documents hot configuration reload, metrics, and performance monitoring, but those features alone do not prove end-to-end recovery to YouTube after every fault.
  • Monitoring: inspect MediaMTX logs and YouTube stream health, and arrange a way to notice when the stream stops.
  • Content rights and channel rules: use video and audio you have the right to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content rules if you plan to monetize. A technically valid relay does not grant rights to the program material.

If you use UDP in the local stream path and see occasional pauses, the Raspberry Pi camera documentation identifies insufficient UDP receive-buffer space as one possible cause of dropped data. It describes sysctl buffer settings as an intervention and notes a configuration-file distinction on Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm. Apply that advice only when UDP is involved and pauses fit the symptom; it is not a universal fix. Consult the Pi camera guide for the applicable settings.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely check What to do
MediaMTX cannot open the camera OS architecture, camera compatibility, device permissions, and the selected deployment Use the matching binary or documented Docker setup; verify that the exact camera is supported. Some cameras require a custom libcamera and a source build.
YouTube never receives the stream Current Stream URL, stream key, destination syntax, and RTMP/RTMPS protocol Copy fresh values from Live Control Room, verify the forwarding configuration against MediaMTX’s current guide, then review MediaMTX logs.
YouTube reports an SSL or connection error Whether the URL uses RTMPS and whether the server address is the one currently shown by YouTube Correct protocol and address first; YouTube suggests port 443 when appropriate. Avoid relying on an old sample hostname or certificate fingerprint.
Stream appears to connect but is rejected or has no sound Whether the outgoing feed contains both video and audio Inspect the actual output. Add a supported audio source, such as the documented USB-microphone/GStreamer/ALSA path, if needed.
Video pauses intermittently Upload stability, stream-health warnings, source behavior, and whether the affected local path uses UDP Test upload capacity and representative content. If UDP is used, investigate receive-buffer limits as described in the Pi guide; do not apply that fix blindly.
Stream does not return after reboot or an outage Service/container startup, source availability, network recovery, and YouTube’s ingest state Review logs and test each failure mode on your installation. The documented MediaMTX features do not guarantee automatic recovery across the entire chain.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a live Pi camera, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded material at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-ingest service. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
