The franchise’s adaptation chain has three main links: Tina Fey’s 2004 film, the Broadway musical that grew from it, and the 2024 musical film adapted from the stage version. So the new movie is both connected to the original and filtered through the musical’s songs and theatrical format. The Associated Press likewise described it as a screen adaptation of the theater adaptation in its January 11, 2024 review.
That distinction matters if you are choosing which version to watch. The 2004 film offers the familiar story in its original screen form; the 2024 film retells the property as a musical. The stage show is the full theater experience, while the movie presents a film-length version. Those are useful comparison points, not a promise that every viewer will prefer one edition. The available evidence does not establish a complete scene-by-scene or song-by-song list of changes, so a detailed omissions checklist would be misleading.

The AP’s review framed the update as the story “now in song,” and discussed its PG-13 rating. The film’s musical format—not a claim that it reproduces every beat of the 2004 movie—is the most useful expectation to bring to it.

Paramount announced that the film would begin streaming on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on March 5, 2024. That was a dated launch announcement, not confirmation of current availability in either country; see the March 4, 2024 announcement for the original terms.
What music is on the movie soundtrack?
Mean Girls (Music from the Motion Picture) is the soundtrack album for the 2024 movie, not the original Broadway cast recording. Paramount Music lists 13 tracks and credits music to Jeff Richmond, Nell Benjamin, and Reneé Rapp on its album page. Universal Music Canada’s January 12, 2024 announcement also identifies it as the soundtrack to the movie adapted from the 2018 Broadway musical. Those sources establish the album and its track list, but not a currently available CD or vinyl edition.

These figures describe the film’s January 2024 domestic opening, not its entire audience or lifetime performance. The Associated Press reported an estimated $28 million domestic opening weekend on January 14, 2024. It also cited exit-poll estimates that 76% of opening-weekend ticket buyers were female and 70% of audience members were ages 18–34. Those demographic figures should be read as estimates for that opening-weekend audience only; the AP report attributes them to exit polls.
In a March 4, 2024 streaming announcement, Paramount said the film had earned more than $102 million worldwide by that point. That was a cumulative figure at the time of the announcement, not a final lifetime total. The same release quoted Paramount’s president of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson: “The property is iconic.”
