McDonald’s Japan’s 2025 Hatsune Miku collaboration was a limited-time Shaka Shaka fries promotion paired with animated social videos—not an announced Miku toy or retail merchandise launch. The Japanese campaign featured two seasoning flavors, planned to run from February 26 through early April 2025. Those dates are historical; the announcement does not establish that the menu items are available now.
What McDonald’s Japan announced
On February 20, 2025, McDonald’s Japan announced its first collaboration between Hatsune Miku and Shaka Shaka fries. The restaurant described the tie-up as a Japan campaign combining flavored fries with animated videos for social media. It was not presented as a worldwide McDonald’s promotion.
The menu offer comprised two seasonings and Shaka Shaka Potenage sets pairing fries with Chicken McNuggets. The company’s planned menu period was February 26 through early April 2025; some restaurant locations were excluded. The announcement listed starting prices for the Potenage sets, with prices varying by location and delivery.
Which Shaka Shaka flavors were included?
| Flavor | How the 2025 announcement described it |
|---|---|
| Ume Nori Shio | A Japanese plum and seaweed-salt flavor, presented as a spring-style option. |
| Garlic Black Pepper Mayo | A garlic, black pepper, and mayonnaise-style flavor, described as the punchier option. |
These are the announcement’s flavor descriptions, not independent taste-test findings. It did not provide nutrition details in the cited release.

How Hatsune Miku featured in the campaign
The campaign videos showed cat-eared Hatsune Miku shaking fries. McDonald’s Japan credited four animators with creating the videos: daniwellP, Hamafugu, birdman, and Oone. The company planned to publish the videos sequentially on its official X and TikTok accounts beginning February 22, 2025.
The February 20 announcement also teased something for March 9, known as Miku Day, with the question, “Will something happen on March 9, ‘Miku Day’?” It did not specify what that later content would be. The teaser is not evidence of a particular product or collectible.
