Maya Hawke released the explicit music video for “Thérèse” on July 18, 2022. Directed by Brady Corbet, it turns the song’s subdued folk sound into a woodland scene that shifts from intimacy to police intervention and arrest imagery. Hawke has said the song is about loneliness, social pressure, and the harm of being pushed into someone else’s idea of who you should be.
What happens in the “Thérèse” video?
The video follows an intimate gathering in the woods. Police interrupt the scene, and it ends with Hawke’s character singing while handcuffed. The contrast between the quiet song and the increasingly confrontational images is central to the video’s effect.
The video is explicit in its sexual imagery. Collider reported that it opens with a warning for X-rated material and was shot on 35mm film. Those are details reported by Collider, rather than a description of the video’s meaning.
What is Maya Hawke’s “Thérèse” about?
Hawke described the idea behind the video as the feeling that “loneliness is the worst thing, until you realise it’s far superior to bad company.” She connected that idea to childhood freedom and the way puberty and culture can pressure people to imitate others instead of being themselves. She also said she hoped the song would make listeners feel something other than “shame, self-hatred, and loneliness.”

In comments reported by NME, Hawke described “Thérèse” as being about feeling trapped in a version of yourself created by somebody else. She connected that experience to gender and misogyny, and to the way girls can be viewed as sexual beings from a young age. Hawke said the title and central idea came from Balthus’s painting Thérèse Dreaming; this is her stated inspiration, not a definitive interpretation of the painting.
Why the video uses a woodland setting
The release page says Hawke and Corbet drew inspiration from Japanese photographer Kohei Yoshiyuki’s Kōen series, which depicts sexual activity in Tokyo parks. The page also reproduces Hawke’s reflection on the enduring tension between public and private. In the video, that tension becomes literal when a private gathering is exposed to authority and public scrutiny.

“Thérèse” was the first single from Moss, Hawke’s second album, announced for release on September 23, 2022. The album came out on that date, and the official artist store lists “Thérèse” as track eight on the 12-inch LP. The store’s collection page showed the CD as sold out when it was checked; stock can change, so that status should not be treated as current.
