Hines died on December 29, 2023, at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey. Broadway.com, attributing the information to Variety, reported that he died of natural causes. The Los Angeles Times reported that his cousin Richard Nurse confirmed the death and location.
Who was Maurice Hines?
Born Maurice Robert Hines Jr. in Harlem on December 13, 1943, he began tap lessons at five with Henry LeTang. Hines went on to study ballet, African dance, Dunham Technique and the work of Alvin Ailey and Frank Hatchett. He described the physical challenge of adapting to other forms as having to “redesign my body.”
How did Maurice and Gregory Hines perform together?
Maurice and his younger brother Gregory began as a child act, performing as the Hines Kids and later the Hines Brothers. In the early 1960s, their father, drummer Maurice Hines Sr., joined them as Hines, Hines and Dad. The brothers made their Broadway debut in 1954 in The Girl in the Pink Tights; the Los Angeles Times reported they were 10 and 8.

They later pursued distinct careers. Gregory became more prominent in Hollywood, while Maurice built a body of work centered on live theater, choreography, directing, touring and his own stage productions. Their tap styles differed, too: Maurice said he aimed for the full-body approach of Fayard Nicholas, while Gregory “dances from the waist down.”
What Broadway shows was Maurice Hines in?
Uptown…It’s Hot!
Hines conceived, directed, choreographed and starred in Uptown…It’s Hot! The production played 17 sold-out weeks in Atlantic City before moving to Broadway, according to a Broadway Dance Center memorial biography; that figure is the center’s account, not a separately audited box-office total. In 1986, Hines received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for the show.

Other Broadway work
His Broadway credits included Eubie!, Bring Back Birdie and Sophisticated Ladies. Hines also conceived, directed, choreographed and starred in Hot Feet, which reached Broadway in 2006. The musical retold The Red Shoes through the music of Earth, Wind & Fire.
Actor-director-producer Mel Johnson Jr., who worked with Hines, praised his choreography as “some of the best I’ve ever seen, breathtaking.” Johnson said the dancing left performers exhausted, but they valued the opportunity to perform at that level on Broadway.

What movie did Maurice and Gregory Hines appear in together?
The brothers appeared together in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1984 film The Cotton Club. A later documentary, Maurice Hines: Bring Them Back, directed and produced by John Carluccio in 2019, examined the brothers’ relationship as well as Maurice’s life and work. Carluccio said Coppola picked up on tension between them and incorporated it into the film’s story.
What was Tappin’ Thru Life?
Tappin’ Thru Life: An Evening with Maurice Hines was an autobiographical stage show that brought his career story to the stage. It played in Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., in 2013. The Los Angeles Times also described a version featuring a dance company that blended tap and ballet and an all-female orchestra.

What did Maurice Hines do later in his career?
Hines continued headlining into his early seventies and taught tap workshops. His career, spanning roughly seven decades, was not limited to performing: he was also a choreographer, director and creator of stage productions.
