Keith Morrison became Matthew Perry’s stepfather when he married Perry’s mother, Suzanne, in 1981. Perry later credited Morrison with holding the family together, while accounts of Perry’s memoir also describe times he felt like an outsider. Morrison’s affectionate public comments and later grief-era recollections add another perspective—but they do not make the relationship a simple story of either perfect closeness or estrangement.
How did Keith Morrison become Matthew Perry’s stepfather?
Morrison married Suzanne Perry in 1981, when Matthew was a child. Perry’s biological father was actor John Bennett Perry; Morrison was his stepfather, not a replacement for or another name for his biological father. The marriage made Morrison part of the family in which Matthew grew up.
What did Matthew Perry say about Morrison?
In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry described Morrison as a stabilizing presence in the family. TV Insider reproduced this line from the memoir: “But my family was held together by one man, and that was Keith Morrison.” TV Insider’s account also notes a more complicated side: Perry sometimes felt outside the family. Those accounts can coexist—his gratitude for Morrison’s role does not establish that Perry always felt fully included.
For Perry’s own account and fuller context, read Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. The memoir is the most direct source for how he described his experience, though quotations reproduced in news coverage are excerpts rather than a substitute for the book.

How did Morrison describe his stepson?
Morrison spoke warmly about Perry in public. On Watch What Happens Live in 2017, he said he had thought Perry would become famous, though not necessarily as an actor. In comments to People in 2020, Morrison described Perry as good, bright, intense, talented and focused, and said the family was able to be with him through much of his struggle with addiction. These recollections offer Morrison’s perspective; they do not erase the difficulty of that period or establish every detail of Perry’s private experience. TV Insider reported both sets of comments in its coverage of their relationship.
What did Morrison say after Perry’s death?
Perry died on October 28, 2023, aged 54. Morrison’s later remarks are best read as dated recollections made in grief, not as a definitive account of Perry’s inner life.

March 2024: Morrison’s recollection of Perry’s final period
In a conversation with Hoda Kotb reported by the Los Angeles Times on March 13, 2024, Morrison said Perry had been happy before his death: “he was happy.” Morrison also described Perry and Suzanne as exceptionally close in the preceding period and said that recollection gave him comfort. That is Morrison’s memory of the period, not an independently verified psychological assessment. He also spoke about the persistence of grief: “It doesn’t go away. It’s with you everyday, it’s with you all the time.” The Los Angeles Times reported the interview and its context.
October 2024: the family’s public remembrance
Around the first anniversary of Perry’s death, family members spoke publicly about his focus on helping others and encouraging people to seek help. Morrison discussed the goal of the Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada. The Los Angeles Times covered the anniversary appearance; it was a public remembrance and discussion of the foundation, rather than a new account of the earlier family relationship. April 2026: Morrison’s statement at a sentencing hearing
At the April 2026 sentencing hearing for Jasveen Sangha, Morrison spoke about the family’s ongoing grief and Perry’s lost potential. The Associated Press reported his words: “There was a spark to that man I have never seen anywhere else.” The statement belongs to that court context and reflects Morrison’s grief; it is not evidence of a newly revealed detail about their relationship while Perry was growing up. The Associated Press reported on the hearing.

The public record presents two complementary perspectives. Perry’s memoir credited Morrison with holding the family together while acknowledging that Perry sometimes felt outside the family. Morrison’s comments across the years convey affection, describe the family’s presence during Perry’s addiction struggle, and later express grief. Taken together, they support a relationship of meaningful family connection and complexity—not a claim that the two were either always close in every respect or estranged.
