Matt Shirvington made his Carols in the Domain hosting debut in 2023, joining his Sunrise co-host Natalie “Nat” Barr on stage. The festive feature published by PerthNow on 17 December 2023 paired the new role with a glimpse of Shirvington’s family Christmas karaoke tradition.
Shirvington’s first Carols in the Domain hosting year
Shirvington had attended Carols in the Domain before, but 2023 was his first time hosting from the stage. “I have been to Carols in the past, but never up on stage. So, who knows — anything could happen,” he told PerthNow.

He and Barr were familiar partners from Sunrise, where Shirvington had taken on the full-time hosting role earlier that year after David Koch’s departure. Shirvington described the transition after Koch’s long tenure as daunting, but also called it “a really good transition.”
For the concert, he framed the hosts’ role as supporting the performers rather than taking the spotlight: “At the end of the day, more than anything, Nat and I are just traffic cops, so we’ll just be throwing to the people that really matter — the performers and the performances.”

A Christmas karaoke tradition at home
Shirvington said his sister started a family karaoke tradition in the years after COVID restrictions had limited singing and gathering. The family now sings after Christmas lunch, and the song choices are not confined to carols.
His go-to was “Under the Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers. He wondered whether Queen’s “We Are The Champions” or “Bohemian Rhapsody” might make for livelier alternatives. The anecdote offers a personal counterpart to the public singalong: festive music is part of his family’s Christmas, too.
What the 2023 concert had planned
PerthNow’s feature listed Casey Donovan, Rhonda Burchmore, Paulini, Mahalia Barnes, Silvia Colloca and 2023 The Voice winner Tarryn Stokes among the scheduled performers. Father Christmas and The Wiggles were also announced for that year’s program.
The article said the 2023 concert was scheduled for Saturday, 23 December at 7:30 pm on Seven. Those details describe the event as planned in 2023, not a current broadcast schedule or lineup.
The wider Sunrise context in the 2023 feature
PerthNow reported that Sunrise was Australia’s favourite breakfast television show for the 20th year in a row. It also reported the program had 28 per cent more national viewers than Today, almost 16 per cent more viewers in capital cities, and a 59 per cent lead in regional Australia.
These are figures as reported by PerthNow on 17 December 2023. The feature did not identify an original audience-measurement report, measurement period or methodology, so they should be read as the article’s reported comparisons rather than independently verified statistics.

The hosting partnership continued in 2024
A 7NEWS report published on 15 December 2023 also described Shirvington preparing for his first Carols in the Domain hosting appearance. A separate 7NEWS report in November 2024 said Barr and Shirvington would return as hosts for that year’s event. That documents their partnership continuing into 2024; it does not establish a 2026 host lineup or schedule.
