Who was Matt Roberts?
Roberts was 3 Doors Down’s original lead guitarist and one of the band’s founding members. The group broke through with “Kryptonite,” a 2000 hit from its debut album, The Better Life. Roberts died in West Bend, Wisconsin, on August 20, 2016. An Associated Press report carried by The Guardian said police responded to a hotel and initially found no signs of trauma; the cause of death was not immediately known. Later accounts described Roberts’ death as an accidental drug overdose. In a contemporaneous report, UPI attributed an apparent prescription-drug overdose account to his father. Why did Roberts leave 3 Doors Down?
Roberts left the band in 2012, citing health concerns. His departure statement, reproduced by TheWrap, said: “3 Doors Down will always have a special place in my heart and it saddens me to take this time off. But my health has to be my first priority.”
TheWrap also reported the band’s explanation that health and circulation problems had been exacerbated by its touring schedule. The band’s statement referred to nearly 300 dates a year; that figure is the band’s cited description, not an independently audited count. TheWrap.
