Kathy Bates said her “abject terror” came while she was creating Madeline “Matty” Matlock for the new Matlock’s pilot—not from regretting the decision to join the show or from being afraid throughout production. To manage the pressure, she kept her attention on the scenes and the work, with a passage about fear from Dune written into her script as a reminder.
What Kathy Bates said frightened her
In a September 5, 2024 interview with Wesley Stenzel for Entertainment Weekly, republished by Yahoo Entertainment, Bates described a moment during preparation for the pilot when she was creating the character of Matty. “For the pilot, I went through a moment of just abject terror of creating this woman,” she said. The interview was edited for clarity and length.
Her account is specifically about the challenge of creating the character for the pilot. It does not establish that Bates regretted taking the role or stayed afraid during the months of production. Read the interview at Yahoo Entertainment.
How she kept the pressure in perspective
Bates said she tried not to dwell on the responsibility of carrying the role for months. Instead, she returned her focus to the scenes in front of her and the work itself: “I can’t think about that. I have to think about the work.”

She also wrote a passage about fear from Frank Herbert’s Dune into her script so she could look at it while preparing. In her account, the passage served as a reminder to face the fear and refocus, not as a connection between the novel and the plot of Matlock.
The role she was preparing to play
The interview describes the new Matlock as a legal drama in which Bates plays retired attorney Madeline “Matty” Matlock, who joins a New York law firm. It characterizes the series as combining a case each week with an ongoing story, while the older Andy Griffith Matlock exists as a television show within the new series. Those are descriptions given in the interview, not a separate comparison of the two programs.
