Spoilers for the full film, including the credits scene. Lucy chooses John, her former boyfriend, over Harry. She ends things with Harry after realizing that an ideal-looking match is not the same as being in love. Lucy also admits that money helped drive her earlier breakup with John, and the credits show the couple marrying at City Hall.
Why does Lucy break up with Harry?
Harry appears to offer the life Lucy once wanted: wealth, attentive courtship, and the traits that make him look exceptional by the standards of her matchmaking work. But the film distinguishes an impressive match on paper from an intimate relationship. Lucy recognizes that the first does not guarantee the second. The screenplay makes clear that she does not leave because Harry is revealed as secretly cruel.

Lucy discovers an engagement ring among Harry’s belongings and learns that he had leg-lengthening surgery. The surgery gives physical form to the pressure to meet desirable standards—the same checklist logic that shapes Lucy’s professional world. It complicates the image of Harry as simply a perfect prospect: he, too, has been affected by the demand to make himself more desirable. Lucy’s decision is about whether their relationship feels like love, not a punishment for his insecurity. ELLE’s interview with Celine Song discusses the film’s view of romance and cost.
Why does Lucy choose John?
John is an actor still trying to establish his career, and Lucy knows him through years of shared life rather than a list of appealing traits. Their history gives her a kind of emotional recognition that Harry’s wealth and attentiveness cannot provide. At the same time, Lucy does not pretend that practical circumstances never mattered: she acknowledges that financial insecurity was part of why she left John.

- Materialists [Blu-Ray]
Their anniversary meal at a halal cart crystallizes the dissatisfaction Lucy felt with their materially difficult life. Her return to John is therefore not a claim that money is irrelevant or that she was wrong to want stability. It is a choice to value their connection without treating financial status as a substitute for it. The Associated Press framed the film’s central question as whether a romantic comedy can be honest about money. The AP’s coverage addresses that tension.
What happens in the credits scene?
John proposes, Lucy accepts, and the credits scene shows them getting married at City Hall. The scene makes their reunion a real commitment within the story, rather than leaving it as a hopeful possibility. Song explained the choice to end with the City Hall sequence in an interview with CinemaBlend.

Is the ending a happy ending?
It is hopeful and romantic, but not a guarantee that the couple’s practical problems have disappeared. The film confirms that Lucy and John choose one another and marry; it does not show how they will manage money or whether their long-term compatibility will withstand the pressures that contributed to their first breakup.
That gap is part of the ending’s meaning. The marriage image offers romantic certainty, while the couple’s financial future remains unknown. The film treats material conditions as real forces in relationships, yet questions whether status, income, height, or lifestyle can secure intimacy on their own. Harry is not proof that comfort is corrupt, and John is not proof that love automatically solves hardship. Lucy’s choice separates emotional connection from external criteria without pretending the latter have no consequences.
