What is the Bloody Hundredth?
The 100th Bomb Group was a unit whose bombing missions over Nazi Germany form the series’ focus. Apple describes the story through the airmen’s raids and the dangers and hardships they faced, including cold, lack of oxygen, capture, injury, and death. The series centers on this group; it is not a complete history of every Allied air unit in the war.

#1 Best Overall
The broader setting is the Eighth Air Force and the air war. The National WWII Museum’s Masters of the Air topic page connects the series with related historical resources and a discussion with producer Kirk Saduski and historian-author Donald L. Miller about adapting the book.
Is Masters of the Air based on a true story?
Yes: the series is based on Miller’s book and follows the real 100th Bomb Group, while its named characters are based on real airmen. That historical foundation does not establish that every scene, line of dialogue, or event is a literal reconstruction. The available official descriptions support identifying the real people and the unit behind the story, but not a scene-by-scene accuracy verdict.

For context on the real conditions and the air war, TIME’s January 26, 2024 interview with Miller includes his account of bomber conditions, including unheated aircraft and freezing oxygen masks. Treat those descriptions as Miller’s explanation in the interview, rather than as a substitute for a separately sourced technical history. In the same interview, Miller said: “There could not have been a D-Day landing had the German Luftwaffe controlled the skies over the invasion beaches.” TIME: “The Real History Behind Masters of the Air”
