The principal cast of Disney’s Mary Poppins went in markedly different directions after the 1964 film: Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke continued long careers on screen and stage, Glynis Johns became a celebrated musical-theater performer, and Karen Dotrice eventually retired from acting. David Tomlinson and child actor Matthew Garber have died; Johns died in 2024. Here is what the available biographies establish about the performers and their later careers—not a claim about every living cast member’s status today.
Who played the Banks family and their visitors?
The film’s central cast included Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke as Bert, David Tomlinson as George Banks, Glynis Johns as Winifred Banks, Karen Dotrice as Jane Banks, and Matthew Garber as Michael Banks. The supporting cast included Hermione Baddeley as Ellen, Ed Wynn as Uncle Albert, Elsa Lanchester as Katie Nanna, Arthur Treacher as Constable Jones, and Reginald Owen as Admiral Boom, according to D23’s film entry.

D23 reports that the film received 13 Academy Award nominations and won five, including the 1964 Best Actress award for Andrews. The award totals here are reported by D23, rather than drawn from an Academy database.
What became of the principal cast?
Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins)
Mary Poppins was Andrews’s feature-film debut, and she won the 1964 Best Actress Oscar for playing the title character. That career-making beginning is the key post-film fact established in D23’s biography. The available source does not provide a current account of her health, residence, or work schedule.

Dick Van Dyke (Bert and Mr. Dawes Senior)
Van Dyke played both Bert and the elderly bank chairman Mr. Dawes Senior, concealed beneath heavy makeup and credited as “Nackvid Keyd.” His official biography also notes a 1964 Grammy Award connected to the film’s soundtrack. The double role is easy to miss: Dawes is not simply another actor in the bank sequence, but Van Dyke in disguise.
David Tomlinson (George Banks)
Tomlinson continued appearing in Disney films, including The Love Bug (1969) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). He died in London on June 24, 2000, according to D23’s biography.

Glynis Johns (Winifred Banks)
Johns went on to a major stage career and won a Tony Award for playing Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. The Associated Press reported that Sondheim wrote “Send in the Clowns” to suit her distinctive voice. Johns died on January 4, 2024, at age 100, the AP reported in its obituary.
Karen Dotrice (Jane Banks)
After playing Jane, Dotrice appeared with Garber in two other Disney films: The Three Lives of Thomasina and The Gnome-Mobile. D23 says she returned to the United States in 1980, later played Desdemona in Broadway’s Othello, and retired from acting to focus on motherhood. Her D23 biography describes that career path; it does not establish a current work or health update.

Matthew Garber (Michael Banks)
Garber’s best-known screen work was as a child in The Three Lives of Thomasina, Mary Poppins, and The Gnome-Mobile. D23 records that he lived 21 years. Biography.com’s retrospective says he died in 1977 at age 21 and attributes his death to pancreatitis; that cause is reported by Biography.com, rather than by D23’s Garber biography.

The film also featured Hermione Baddeley, Ed Wynn, Elsa Lanchester, Arthur Treacher, and Reginald Owen in the roles listed above. The available cast entry identifies their parts but does not provide enough biographical detail to give a reliable account of what each did afterward. It is better to leave those later-career details open than to infer a “where are they now” update from a cast list alone.
What this cast update can—and cannot—say
Several of the cast’s later careers are well documented in the cited biographies, but they do not amount to a comprehensive status check for every surviving performer as of October 4, 2026. In particular, an account of Andrews’s debut and award, or Dotrice’s retirement from acting, should not be mistaken for confirmation of either person’s present-day health or activities. The confirmed deaths in the sources are Tomlinson in 2000, Garber in 1977, and Johns in 2024.
