Mary Fowler’s Instagram carousel included a photo of her embracing Nathan Cleary, making the couple’s relationship public on social media in January 2024. The post followed Cleary’s beach photo of the pair earlier that week; neither post established when their private relationship began.
What Fowler and Cleary posted
On 19 January 2024, PerthNow reported that Fowler’s six-image Instagram carousel included a photograph of her embracing Cleary. PerthNow’s report described the post as the public Instagram moment.
Cleary had shared a beach photograph of the two earlier in the week, captioned “that’s life,” according to Fox Sports and PerthNow. Fox Sports reported that Fowler captioned her post “Slide 3,” referring to text in the carousel; the photo of the couple appeared later in the sequence.
What was known about their relationship before the posts
Reports of public sightings during 2023—including an ice-cream outing in Sydney and a walk in Perth—had prompted speculation about the pair. ELLE also covered the reported sightings. They are public reports, not evidence of a confirmed relationship start date. The January posts made the relationship visible to followers; they did not reveal when it began privately.

Why the announcement drew attention
At the time, Fowler was described as a Matildas striker and Cleary as a Penrith Panthers halfback and NRL player. The pairing brought together prominent figures from Australian football and rugby league, and coverage framed the sequence of posts as a “soft launch” followed by a “hard launch.” Those are media descriptions, not formal relationship milestones.
PerthNow attributed comments to Cleary about public interest in his personal life, including: “That was a hurdle at the time. You start to learn to deal with that.” The outlet also quoted him saying: “I haven’t had too many people look into my personal life. But it’s just what comes with it. It’s something that I can’t control.” Those comments provide context about attention on Cleary; they do not establish Fowler’s views or feelings.

The posts and contemporaneous coverage establish that Fowler and Cleary publicly presented themselves together on Instagram in January 2024. They do not establish a private relationship timeline or explain the couple’s personal decisions. Later coverage, including a 2026 profile in The Australian Women’s Weekly, continued to describe them as partners and reported Cleary praising Fowler in his Dally M speech; that is later context, separate from the January 2024 announcement.
