Thunderbolts* is Marvel’s team of reluctant collaborators, not a conventional Avengers-style lineup. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova anchors an ensemble that includes Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, U.S. Agent, and newcomer Bob Reynolds. The group is assembled by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine for a dangerous mission despite its members’ distrust, conflicting motives, and morally complicated pasts.

Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* brings together a team that is less like a polished Avengers unit and more like a collection of damaged, distrusted, and morally complicated operatives forced into the same mission. Florence Pugh leads the ensemble as Yelena Belova, alongside Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent, and newcomer Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds.

The group is assembled by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, an authority figure whose motives are considerably less straightforward than those of a conventional superhero recruiter. Here is the full Thunderbolts* cast and character guide, including the team’s relationships, its connection to Marvel Comics, and the film’s spoiler-sensitive Sentry and Void storyline.

Thunderbolts* cast at a glance

Actor Character Role in the ensemble
Florence Pugh Yelena Belova The emotional center and one of the team’s most capable operatives
Sebastian Stan Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier An experienced super-soldier with hard-earned perspective
David Harbour Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian Yelena’s adoptive father and a flamboyant former Soviet super-soldier
Hannah John-Kamen Ava Starr / Ghost A phase-shifting operative shaped by isolation and instability
Olga Kurylenko Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster A highly trained fighter carrying the consequences of her past
Wyatt Russell John Walker / U.S. Agent A government-associated super-soldier whose idea of heroism is deeply contested
Lewis Pullman Bob Reynolds / Sentry / Void The newcomer whose powers and identity dramatically raise the stakes
Julia Louis-Dreyfus Valentina Allegra de Fontaine The political operator who brings the mission and team together

Who is on the Thunderbolts* team?

Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova

Yelena Belova is the film’s clearest emotional anchor. Florence Pugh returns to the role after Black Widow and subsequent MCU appearances, bringing a character who is exceptionally dangerous in the field but far less certain about what she wants outside it.

Yelena’s relationship with Alexei Shostakov gives the ensemble one of its most personal dynamics. Their adoptive father-and-daughter bond is affectionate, embarrassing, combative, and shaped by years of complicated history. That relationship helps keep Yelena from becoming merely the team’s efficient assassin: she is also someone trying to determine what, if anything, gives her life purpose after years of being used by institutions.

Among a group of people who are reluctant to trust one another, Yelena often functions as the audience’s emotional point of reference. She recognizes the team’s absurdity, resists easy inspirational language, and still has a strong instinct to protect people who do not necessarily deserve her loyalty.

Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier

Bucky Barnes is the team’s most experienced super-soldier and one of its comparatively grounded presences. Sebastian Stan’s character has spent much of his MCU history dealing with the consequences of manipulation, violence, and an identity imposed on him by others.

That history makes Bucky a natural counterweight to John Walker. Both characters have been associated with the super-soldier legacy, but they represent very different relationships to authority, reputation, and accountability. Bucky’s experience also gives him a practical understanding of what happens when governments try to turn people into symbols.

He is not simply the team’s automatic leader. Bucky has more judgment and perspective than many of his colleagues, but Thunderbolts* places him among people who are difficult to command and even harder to trust. His political and leadership role is therefore part of the film’s larger question: can people with histories of failure cooperate without pretending those failures never happened?

David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian

Alexei Shostakov, known as Red Guardian, is Yelena’s adoptive father and the group’s larger-than-life former Soviet super-soldier. David Harbour plays him as a man who is simultaneously boastful, needy, funny, and genuinely attached to his family.

Red Guardian’s self-image is built around his old super-soldier identity. He wants recognition and tends to narrate his own legend, even when the people around him are not convinced. That makes his scenes with Yelena especially useful: their relationship exposes the difference between Alexei’s theatrical version of himself and the family history they actually share.

His presence also complicates the team’s tone. Thunderbolts* deals with trauma and dangerous powers, but Red Guardian brings an awkward, human scale to the group. He is not just another fighter with a costume; he is a father trying to remain relevant to a daughter who has outgrown the stories he tells about himself.

Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost

Ava Starr, or Ghost, is a phase-shifting operative whose abilities allow her to move through solid matter. Hannah John-Kamen returns to the MCU character introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Ghost’s powers are inseparable from her history of alienation and instability. She has not experienced superhuman ability as a clean gift or a straightforward path to heroism. Instead, her condition has made ordinary life difficult and left her vulnerable to organizations that see her as an asset rather than a person.

That background gives her a natural affinity with the film’s broader group of outsiders. Ghost is secretive and difficult to read, but her guarded behavior is not presented as random hostility. It is the result of someone who has repeatedly learned that dependence can become another form of control.

Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster

The film’s Taskmaster is Antonia Dreykov, played by Olga Kurylenko. This is not an interchangeable codename detached from the MCU’s existing continuity: Antonia’s identity and history are connected directly to Black Widow.

Taskmaster is known for her ability to analyze and reproduce the movements of other fighters, making her one of the team’s most formidable combatants. But the character’s importance in Thunderbolts* is not limited to that power. Antonia is also part of the film’s continuing examination of coercion, control, and the damage caused when people are turned into weapons.

Her presence reinforces one of the ensemble’s defining features: several members are not entering the mission with a clean heroic history or complete freedom over the choices that shaped them.

Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent

John Walker is the government-associated super-soldier known as U.S. Agent. Wyatt Russell plays him as a man whose military credentials and physical abilities do not settle the more important question of whether he should be trusted with power.

Walker wants to be understood as a hero, but his conduct and self-image repeatedly complicate that claim. He is competitive, defensive, and highly sensitive to status. Unlike Bucky, who has spent years confronting the harm done in his name, Walker is still inclined to view recognition and authority as evidence that he belongs among the good guys.

That makes him an especially volatile member of the team. Walker is not simply a villain hiding inside a superhero uniform, nor is he a conventional redemption story waiting to happen. He is a government-built symbol whose behavior tests how much the label “hero” can conceal.

Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds / Sentry / Void

Bob Reynolds is the team’s major newcomer, played by Lewis Pullman. His connection to Sentry and the Void makes him more than another recruit with a useful power set: he introduces the film’s most consequential mystery and changes the scale of the danger facing the group.

In the spoiler-free portion of the story, Bob’s arrival adds uncertainty to an already unstable team. He does not have the same established history with the other characters, and the people around him have strong reasons to be suspicious of anyone presented as a powerful new asset.

The Sentry/Void concept also fits the film’s interest in divided identities and buried damage. The ensemble is made up of people struggling with the consequences of what they have done or what has been done to them; Bob brings that tension into the realm of extraordinary power.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine

Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is the person who sets the mission in motion. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s character is not a field operative standing shoulder to shoulder with the team. She is the authority figure—and political operator—who manipulates circumstances so that these particular people are brought together.

Valentina’s involvement is essential to understanding why the team exists at all. This is not a stable organization that has gradually developed trust through shared adventures. It is an assembled unit created for a dangerous purpose, with members whose personal histories and institutional loyalties make cooperation difficult.

Her role also prevents the film’s premise from becoming a simple “new superheroes form a team” story. The Thunderbolts are recruited because they are useful, available, controllable—or because someone believes they can be made to serve a larger agenda. Whether that agenda benefits the recruits is another question.

Why the Thunderbolts are different from the Avengers

The simplest distinction is that the Thunderbolts do not begin as a trusted family of heroes. They are drawn from separate MCU storylines and brought together under pressure. Their shared identity is imposed before their shared loyalty has been earned.

Avengers-style team model Thunderbolts* model
Usually presented as a recognizable heroic coalition Built from antiheroes, operatives, former antagonists, and compromised figures
Members often share a clear public mission Members have different motives, histories, and ideas about authority
Trust is often a foundation of the group Distrust and forced cooperation are part of the premise
Heroic identity is generally accepted The film repeatedly questions who deserves to be called a hero
The threat comes primarily from outside the team The team’s own personalities, histories, and powers are sources of danger

Yelena and Alexei bring a complicated family relationship. Bucky brings the perspective of someone who has survived institutional manipulation. Walker carries government baggage and an unstable definition of heroism. Ghost and Taskmaster are shaped by secrecy, coercion, and trauma. Bob introduces a power that can overwhelm the group’s already fragile balance.

Those connections are an editorial reading of the cast and character material rather than a claim that every member has the same moral status. The central idea is reluctant cooperation: these people may need one another, but necessity is not the same thing as trust.

Spoilers: Bob Reynolds, Sentry, and the Void

Spoiler warning: The following section discusses the film’s Sentry/Void connection and later character developments. Skip it if you only want the cast guide.

Bob Reynolds is tied to Sentry, a figure whose extraordinary power comes with an equally dangerous counterpart: the Void. That duality gives the film its most important threat and turns Bob’s introduction into a question of containment as much as recruitment.

The Sentry/Void connection also reframes the team around him. The Thunderbolts are already a group of people carrying guilt, fractured identities, and difficult pasts. Bob’s story makes that internal conflict literal on a much larger scale: immense hero-like power exists alongside a destructive force that cannot be treated as a separate, easily defeated enemy.

The team’s eventual movement toward a more unified force should therefore not be read as a clean conversion into conventional superheroes. Their cooperation is meaningful precisely because it comes after distrust and failure. The film’s emotional arc is less about proving that every recruit was secretly heroic all along than about asking whether damaged people can make a better choice when the stakes demand it.

Is Thunderbolts* based on one Marvel Comics team?

No. The film uses the Thunderbolts name and draws on a broad Marvel publishing history, but it does not simply reproduce one specific comics roster.

Marvel Comics has used “Thunderbolts” for multiple teams and formations over the years. The movie’s lineup combines MCU characters from different stories, including Yelena, Bucky, Ghost, U.S. Agent, Red Guardian, and Taskmaster, then adds Bob Reynolds as Sentry. The result is a film-specific ensemble rather than a direct screen translation of a single comic-book membership list.

Comics background

Thunderbolts Classic Vol. 1 is a useful starting point for the team’s early comics history. Thunderbolts: Doomstrike offers more recent Thunderbolts-related reading involving Bucky and another formation. Neither collection should be treated as a comic version of the film’s exact cast; they are background for understanding how flexible the Thunderbolts concept has been.

The most complete physical option is the Marvel Studios Thunderbolts* 4K UHD Blu-ray. Marvel also announced a limited-edition SteelBook, along with bonus material such as deleted scenes, a gag reel, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and director commentary. Confirm whether a listing is the standard 4K package, a SteelBook, or a Blu-ray/DVD edition, and verify the seller, region, price, and stock before checkout.

If you prefer a one-time digital purchase or rental, use the currently listed digital retailer rather than assuming that a dated release announcement represents ongoing availability. Subscription streaming should likewise be checked separately from digital purchase: a film being available to buy on a platform does not necessarily mean it is included with that platform’s subscription.

Thunderbolts* collectibles by character

Marvel’s licensed merchandise lineup includes character-focused options such as Marvel Legends figures for Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, John Walker, and Sentry. Funko products have also featured Yelena, Red Guardian, Bucky, John Walker, and Sentry. Inventory is particularly volatile for collectibles, so product pages should be checked for current stock and the exact character version.

A practical starting point for collectors is Thunderbolts* collectibles, especially if you want to compare action figures, vinyl figures, and apparel rather than search for one specific character. Look for licensed Marvel branding and verify the size, format, release version, and seller before buying.

Bottom line

Thunderbolts* is built around an ensemble of people who have not earned the easy trust associated with a conventional superhero team. Yelena is the emotional center; Bucky provides experience and perspective; Red Guardian supplies family tension and larger-than-life bravado; Ghost and Taskmaster embody secrecy and trauma; U.S. Agent exposes the instability behind official heroism; and Bob Reynolds brings the Sentry/Void conflict that threatens to consume the group.

That combination is what makes the cast distinctive. The Thunderbolts are not presented as a replacement Avengers roster with interchangeable heroes. They are a reluctant coalition assembled by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and their most important victory is not simply defeating an external enemy—it is discovering whether cooperation is possible among people who have every reason to distrust one another.
