The twist: when Ketema removes his mask, he is revealed as a white boy. The first issue presents him as T’Challa’s son, but does not establish his biological parentage—and writer Christopher Priest says this is a separate near-future vision, not a change to Marvel’s main continuity.
Who is the new Black Panther?
Ketema is the masked challenger who confronts an older T’Challa over who will rule Wakanda in Marvel Knights: The World To Come #1. Coverage of the issue describes Ketema gaining the upper hand before taking off his mask and revealing himself as a white boy. The story presents him as T’Challa’s son, but that description does not settle how they are related biologically.
The reveal is a plot point in this particular comic, not a broadly announced replacement for T’Challa. For the issue-level account, see ComicBook.com’s report on Ketema’s reveal.
Why is Ketema white—and is he T’Challa’s biological son?
The mask reveal raises questions about Ketema’s parentage, but the available coverage does not provide a definitive explanation. It notes T’Challa’s relationships with Storm and Monica Lynne and discusses possibilities, but those are speculation rather than confirmed answers. The careful distinction is that T’Challa calls Ketema his son; whether Ketema is his biological son remains unresolved.

Does Ketema replace the Black Panther in Marvel’s main continuity?
No mainline succession is established by this story. Priest described the project as “our world to come” and “our own vision of the near future,” adding that it “is not tied into any other bit of Marvel continuity.” His remarks, quoted by Comics Bulletin from an AIPT Comics interview, frame Ketema’s story as its own continuity rather than a change to the wider Marvel setting.

The reveal takes place in Marvel Knights: The World To Come #1, the opening issue of a six-issue limited series. The creative team includes Joe Quesada, Christopher Priest, Richard Isanove, Richard Starkings, and Tyler Smith. The story challenges Wakandan tradition through the contest between T’Challa and Ketema; the mask reveal is its defining first-issue shock.
