No new actor has been confirmed to play Blade in the reports reviewed. Mahershala Ali, who was attached to the Marvel role in 2019, said in July 2026 that he had moved on from the project. His departure does not establish what Marvel plans to do with Blade next.

Has Marvel announced a new Blade actor?

No. The reports available here do not name a replacement or document a Marvel announcement confirming one. A follow-up published by ComicBook.com on September 22, 2026, also discusses Ali’s remarks and training for the role without identifying a successor: ComicBook.com.

That distinction matters: news that Ali has moved on is not the same as news that Marvel has cast someone else. The reports also do not establish that Marvel has permanently abandoned the character or every possible Blade project.

What Mahershala Ali said about Blade

In remarks from a GQ interview reported on July 31, 2026, Ali said, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it.” The Guardian also reported him saying, “I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them.” These are Ali’s comments about his involvement, not a formal Marvel casting or cancellation announcement: The Guardian; TheWrap.

The Los Angeles Times reported on August 3, 2026, that Ali had officially moved on. Its account described a troubled development, including director Bassam Tariq stepping away in 2022 and work stalling amid the 2023 writers’ strike. The paper also quoted Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige expressing regret: “I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala.” Feige’s statement reflects regret about getting the project underway with Ali; it does not announce a successor or explain Marvel’s next step: Los Angeles Times.

How the Blade casting story reached this point

  • 2019: Ali was announced for the role, according to The Guardian and the Los Angeles Times.
  • 2022: Director Bassam Tariq stepped away, according to the Los Angeles Times.
  • 2023: The Los Angeles Times reported that the writers’ strike stalled work on the project.
  • July 31, 2026: The Guardian and TheWrap reported Ali’s remarks about moving on. TheWrap noted that Marvel had not immediately responded to its request for comment at that time; that dated note does not establish Marvel’s current position.
  • August 3, 2026: The Los Angeles Times published further context on Ali’s departure and Feige’s regret.
  • September 22, 2026: ComicBook.com published a follow-up that did not name a replacement actor.

What is—and is not—known about Marvel’s next move

Ali’s stated departure is reported; a replacement casting and Marvel’s future plans are not established by these accounts. Readers should therefore treat claims that a particular actor has been confirmed as unverified unless they can be tied to a dated announcement from Marvel or reliable reporting that names the actor and clearly attributes the information.
