That is not a like-for-like comparison with Dwayne Johnson’s The Smashing Machine: the cited record lists the latter’s production budget at $50 million, its domestic opening weekend at $5,841,662, and its domestic total at $11,407,642 by November 11, 2025. The figures describe different measures and time periods, so the claim that Marty Supreme “doubled” a $40 million box-office result is unsupported.
How much did Marty Supreme make in four days?
The Associated Press reported that Marty Supreme collected about $27.1 million over the four-day Christmas weekend in 2025, calling the result a success for A24. The figure is a reported holiday-weekend gross, not the film’s total box office or profit. Associated Press, December 2025.
AP describes the film as a 1950s-set table-tennis drama. Its holiday performance is a specific four-day frame; it should not be treated as directly equivalent to another film’s opening weekend or lifetime-to-date gross.
What was The Smashing Machine’s box office and budget?
The Numbers lists The Smashing Machine with a $50 million production budget, a domestic opening weekend of $5,841,662, and a cumulative domestic gross of $11,407,642 by November 11, 2025. The opening-weekend figure is also corroborated by Box Office Mojo, which lists the film’s release date as October 3, 2025.

Why the “doubles a $40 million bomb” claim is misleading
- The $40 million figure is not supported as this film’s listed budget. The Numbers lists The Smashing Machine’s production budget as $50 million, not $40 million.
- Budget and box-office gross are different things. A production budget is an expense estimate; it is not money earned at the box office.
- The time windows differ. The $27.1 million figure covers Marty Supreme’s four-day Christmas weekend. The cited Smashing Machine figures refer to its opening weekend and its cumulative domestic gross by a specified date.
- The figures are not a matched global comparison. The cited Smashing Machine grosses are domestic, and the AP holiday figure does not establish a comparable worldwide total.
So, while the reported Marty Supreme holiday-weekend gross exceeded both cited domestic figures for The Smashing Machine, that alone does not validate the headline’s “doubles” wording or establish that either film made a profit or a loss.

Does box office compared with budget show whether a film lost money?
No. A production budget and a reported ticket-sales gross do not, by themselves, reveal what a studio or distributor ultimately earned. These cited figures do not establish theatrical rentals, marketing and distribution expenses, financing, or revenue from later distribution and other sources. They therefore cannot support a precise loss or break-even calculation.
What else is known about Marty Supreme’s theatrical performance?
In January 2026, TheWrap reported that Marty Supreme passed Everything Everywhere All at Once to become A24’s highest-grossing domestic film during its fourth weekend in wide release. The same report described a $6.6 million four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend figure as a projection, not a final result. TheWrap, January 2026.
