On the January 28, 2024 episode of Club Random with Bill Maher, Short addressed speculation that he and Streep were a couple. As quoted by Vanity Fair, he said, “We’re not a couple,” and added, “We are just very close friends.” Vanity Fair published its account on January 29, 2024.
Short’s representative had also described them as “just very good friends, nothing more,” according to that report. The podcast remark was Short’s own statement; the representative’s comment was a separate denial.
Why did people think they were dating?
Speculation followed Short and Streep’s appearance together at the 2024 Golden Globes. They had also co-starred in Only Murders in the Building, where their characters have a romantic storyline. A public appearance and an on-screen relationship can prompt speculation, but neither establishes a romance between the actors.

How does Meryl Streep’s separation from Don Gummer fit in?
It is separate background, not evidence of a relationship with Short. Vanity Fair reported that Streep and Gummer had separated years earlier. Her representative said, “While they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.” That statement concerned Streep and Gummer, not Short and Streep.
