Martha Stewart’s net worth is estimated at $400 million by Celebrity Net Worth, which updated its estimate on September 25, 2026. That is a third-party estimate, not a disclosed or audited personal balance sheet. Forbes put Stewart at $970 million in 2005, a historical figure that should not be read as her current wealth.

How Martha Stewart built her business

Stewart’s business grew by carrying practical expertise in cooking, entertaining, gardening, and home life into different formats. Her path ran from catering to books and a magazine, then into television, internet publishing, and consumer products. The result was a connected lifestyle brand rather than a fortune figure that can be explained by one publicly documented asset.

From Wall Street to catering

After studying history and architectural history at Barnard College, Stewart worked as an institutional stockbroker. In her own account, she said the job taught her about building a business. After leaving Wall Street, she established a catering business; its food presentation and recipes helped shape her first book. Stewart later described the work as teaching her what it takes to build a meaningful, useful enterprise. Her first-person career account was published September 12, 2022.

Books and a magazine put the brand in print

Entertaining, published in 1982, was Stewart’s first book. Martha Stewart Living began in 1990, according to her official biography and career account. The publishing work made her approach to domestic life repeatable: readers could return to recipes, instructions, and ideas beyond a catering event or television appearance. amfAR identified a 2024 title as Stewart’s 100th book, marking a later milestone in that publishing career.

Stewart has also called herself a teacher, saying, “I have always considered myself a teacher, and I firmly believe that I had to learn in order to teach.”

Media and products broadened the business

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1999, according to the official biography. The SEC’s 2008 annual report described the then-public company as spanning publishing, merchandising, internet, and broadcasting. That filing is evidence of the company’s structure at that time, not a description of its current corporate arrangement.

amfAR reports that Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia was launched in 1996 and that the brand continues through media channels and products at retailers. The official biography also describes the Martha by Martha Stewart housewares collection, including cookware and home merchandise. Those products illustrate the reach of the brand; they do not establish Stewart’s personal income or wealth.

What the reported net-worth figures mean

Figure Source and date What it represents
$400 million Celebrity Net Worth, updated September 25, 2026 A third-party estimate of Stewart’s personal net worth. The site says estimates use public sources, but an asset-by-asset calculation has not been independently verified.
$970 million Forbes 400 profile, 2005 A historical estimate that identified media and entertainment, including Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, as the source of her wealth at that time.

The numbers come from different sources and dates, and they should not be treated as a comparable trend line. In particular, a past estimate tied to a public company is not the same thing as a current valuation of Stewart’s personal holdings. The available sources do not establish her current assets, liabilities, licensing income, or revenue mix, and no current audited personal balance sheet is available in them.

What is established—and what is not

The business story is clearer than the present-day wealth calculation. Stewart’s career milestones and the company’s historical activities are documented in first-person accounts, official biography material, and a dated SEC filing. The $400 million figure is a recent estimate from a third-party estimator; its methodology has not been validated here. Without a current personal financial disclosure, greater precision about how her wealth is divided would be speculation.
