Marshall Brickman, the screenwriter who shared the Academy Award for Annie Hall with Woody Allen and later co-wrote the Broadway musical Jersey Boys, died in Manhattan on November 29, 2024. He was 85. His daughter Sophie confirmed his death to the Associated Press; no cause was cited.
Who was Marshall Brickman?
Brickman was an American writer whose career moved across folk music, television comedy, film and musical theater. His best-known work ranged from shaping comedy for late-night television to co-writing acclaimed films with Woody Allen and bringing the Four Seasons’ story to the Broadway stage.

What did Marshall Brickman write for television?
Before his most celebrated film work, Brickman wrote jokes for Allen and worked in television, including as head writer on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. The Television Academy records that he contributed to more than 100 episodes of the show, and lists credits including Candid Camera, The Dick Cavett Show and The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence. The Associated Press credited him with helping shape Carson’s Carnac the Magnificent sketches.
How did he collaborate with Woody Allen?
Brickman and Allen co-wrote Sleeper, Annie Hall and Manhattan; the Associated Press also lists Manhattan Murder Mystery among their co-written films. Their most acclaimed partnership was Annie Hall, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The Washington Post reported that the film received four Oscars: Best Picture, Director, Actress and Original Screenplay.

Brickman also wrote and directed films of his own, including Simon, Lovesick and The Manhattan Project. His film career therefore included both collaboration and work as a director.
What was Brickman’s connection to Jersey Boys?
Brickman and Rick Elice co-wrote the book for Jersey Boys, the musical about the 1960s group the Four Seasons. It premiered on Broadway in 2005, extending Brickman’s writing career from screen and television to musical theater.

What did Brickman say about collaboration?
In wording attributed to a 2011 Writers Guild of America interview by the Associated Press, Brickman described collaboration as a process in which one point of view ultimately leads: “We didn’t write scenes together. I think that’s the death for any collaboration. I don’t think there’s any such thing really as an equal collaboration. I think that in any collaboration, one person, one personality, one point of view has to dominate.”
