They married on August 28, 2004, and have three children: August, Amaya and Andrew. Accounts differ on whether their meeting was in 2001 or 2002, so the timeline below preserves what each report says rather than assigning a single definitive date.
How Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann met
Hermann joined Law & Order: SVU as guest actor Peter Hermann, playing defense attorney Trevor Langan. Parade reports that he filmed his first appearance in November 2001. The Knot and Good Housekeeping, however, say Hargitay and Hermann met on the set in 2002. Those reports do not explain whether the difference reflects filming, broadcast, or the date they personally met.
Hargitay has described an early date that began with Hermann inviting her to a church service. Recalling it in an interview with People, she said: “We went to church together, and it was like getting hit with a lightning bolt. I just started sobbing. Peter thought I was crying because I was so moved by the service. No, it was because I was just overwhelmed, realizing he was the one.” This is Hargitay’s recollection of her reaction, not an independently documented account of what she was feeling.

Hargitay on how they handle disagreements
In a 2026 comment reported by Good Housekeeping, Hargitay described Hermann as a thoughtful listener and said she tries to understand his perspective when they disagree. The comment offers a more recent glimpse of how she says they approach communication, rather than a further dated milestone in their chronology.

Their real relationship and their SVU characters
Hermann’s role as Trevor Langan is part of how the couple met, but the actors’ real-life relationship should not be confused with fictional storylines or speculation about Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson, and her co-star Chris Meloni’s character, Elliot Stabler. The relationship milestones described here concern Hargitay and Hermann, not their characters.
