The short is Laboratory Conditions, a horror and science-fiction film in which Marisa Tomei plays a physician searching for a missing patient. The investigation leads her to an unlawful experiment at a nearby medical school—and to the film’s unsettling question about what researchers might do in the name of knowledge.
What is Laboratory Conditions about?
Set in a hospital late at night, the film follows a physician who discovers that a patient has disappeared. Her search takes her beyond the hospital and into a confrontation with neuroscience researchers conducting an illicit experiment. The supernatural element belongs to the film’s horror premise; this is not a documentary or a claim about real-world evidence for life after death.

The official synopsis frames the story around a conflict between compassion for an individual and the pursuit of scientific knowledge. It asks: “At what point should human compassion outweigh research science and ‘the need to know’?” Gizmodo’s coverage of the short reproduces the synopsis and describes the missing-patient investigation.
