Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive built around a simple but consequential change: its courses sit within a connected world, so races can carry you along roads from one location to the next. The varied environments, changing weather and day-to-night cycle give that world much of its visual appeal. It launched on June 5, 2025; owners of the original Nintendo Switch cannot play it.
Why Mario Kart World looks different
Instead of presenting every course as a separate destination, Mario Kart World links locations with roads. Nintendo’s overview describes settings including cities, plains, desert and ocean, alongside dynamic weather and a day/night cycle. The result is a broader sense of place: a race can move between environments rather than simply beginning and ending on one isolated circuit. Nintendo’s announcement and game details are available on Nintendo’s Mario Kart World page.
The connected map also changes how the game is structured. In Grand Prix, four races form a cup, with routes linking one course to another. The Guardian’s review describes the connected setting as a scenic road-trip experience, while GameSpot discusses how the map expands the series’ course structure. Those are critics’ impressions, not a guarantee that every player will want to explore between races.
What you can do in the game
Grand Prix: four-race cups
Grand Prix is the familiar structured option: compete through a cup of four races. The courses’ links give the journey between them a larger role than in a format built from standalone tracks. Nintendo Life praised the presentation but found the intermissions between courses awkward, a reminder that the new structure may not improve every part of the racing rhythm.
#1 Best Overall
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
Knockout Tour: a long elimination rally
Knockout Tour is the clearest new competitive format. Racers follow a long route and must stay ahead of elimination cutoffs at checkpoints. Nintendo says supported races, including Knockout Tour and Grand Prix, can include up to 24 racers. Nintendo Life singled out Knockout Tour as a standout, making it a particularly compelling reason to look beyond the traditional cup format.
Battle Mode: Balloon Battle and Coin Runners
For arena-style competition, Battle Mode includes Balloon Battle and Coin Runners. These modes offer a change of pace from racing through courses.

Free Roam: explore at your own pace
Free Roam lets you drive around the world, look for missions and secrets, and take in-game photos. It is the most exploratory mode, but its appeal depends on how much you enjoy roaming between objectives. Nintendo Life’s review found its incentives underwhelming; The Guardian also notes that Free Roam is online-only for multiple players. You can race together locally on one system, but you cannot explore together in Free Roam that way.
Driving techniques that add options
Charge Jump lets you clear obstacles, reach rails, grind, briefly ride walls and access shortcuts. It gives the connected environments more practical relevance than scenery alone: routes and surfaces can create alternate ways to move through a course.

How many people can play together?
| Setup | Player capacity or availability |
|---|---|
| Supported races | Up to 24 racers, including in Grand Prix and Knockout Tour, according to Nintendo. |
| One system, split-screen | Up to four players, according to Nintendo. |
| Local wireless across systems | Up to eight players, according to Nintendo. |
| Online play | Available; the cited Nintendo announcement does not specify a player limit here. |
The game is especially suited to households and friend groups that want several kinds of shared play, from local split-screen races to online competition. The Guardian’s review emphasizes its strength as a social experience. If exploring the map together is the priority, note the distinction: The Guardian reports that multi-player Free Roam requires online play, rather than local play on one console.

Platform, price and optional camera
Mario Kart World is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo of America’s April 17, 2025 announcement gave a U.S. regular price of $79.99 and also described a console bundle with a game download code. That is a dated list price, not a current retailer quote; regional pricing, retailer offers and bundle availability can change. Nintendo lists both a physical game and a digital purchase route, so an Amazon listing is not the only way to buy it.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is optional and sold separately. It adds CameraPlay, but it is not required for ordinary racing. Nintendo’s launch announcement said GameChat would be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership through March 31, 2026, with membership required afterward. Because that date has passed, check Nintendo’s current GameChat terms before relying on that feature.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and what to keep in mind
- A good fit: players who want a visually varied Mario Kart world, multiple ways to play, and local or online group racing.
- Consider carefully: players who mainly want tightly paced cup races may dislike the transitions between courses, which Nintendo Life found awkward.
- Set expectations for exploration: Free Roam offers missions, secrets and photography, but Nintendo Life found its rewards lacking. The Guardian’s report also makes clear that multiplayer Free Roam is not a local split-screen activity.
- Check your hardware first: the game requires Nintendo Switch 2; an original Switch is not compatible.
For readers comparing it with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or another kart racer, the useful distinction is not an unsupported claim that one is universally better. Mario Kart World centers its identity on linked routes, the long-form Knockout Tour and Free Roam alongside cup and Battle modes. Whether those additions suit you depends on whether you want racing alone or also value the journey between courses and the chance to explore.
