Mario characters span the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond: heroes and friends such as Luigi, Peach, Toad and Yoshi; rivals such as Bowser and Wario; and figures with their own homes and roles, including Daisy, Rosalina and Donkey Kong. This guide covers the 13 characters featured on Nintendo’s official UK character hub—not every character in the franchise—and explains how to recognize them and where Nintendo highlights them in games.
Mario and his closest allies
Nintendo describes Mario as the Mushroom Kingdom’s main hero. His blue overalls, red cap and moustache make him instantly recognizable. Luigi is his brother; Peach is his friend; Toad serves Peach; and Yoshi is a dependable companion. These relationships offer a quick starting point for identifying the cast.
Mario
Mario is cheerful and resourceful, known for jumping and using power-ups as well as competing in sports. Nintendo’s featured game examples include Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey. Nintendo of America notes that the first Super Mario Bros. game debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 (Nintendo, March 10, 2023).
Luigi
Mario’s younger brother is taller than Mario and can jump higher, according to Nintendo. Luigi is kind, but nervous around ghosts—a trait central to the Luigi’s Mansion games. Nintendo’s examples include Luigi’s Mansion 3, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD and Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

How to use Nintendo’s character and game list
Nintendo’s official character hub presents short biographies and selected game examples for these featured characters. The games named here are examples, not complete filmographies, and the page does not claim to list every character in the franchise. Localized names, game titles and availability can vary by region and change over time; check your regional Nintendo store for current platform and availability details.
Finding Mario character merchandise
For readers looking for a gift or collectible, “Mario character plush” is a useful search phrase. Nintendo’s US merchandise catalog includes plush and toys among its character-merchandise categories (Nintendo merchandise). That category does not establish whether a particular third-party listing is licensed, in stock or suitable. Check the character, licensing information, dimensions, materials, seller and availability on the specific listing.
