Russian influencer Mariana Barutkina reportedly fractured a vertebra after falling while attempting the social-media “Stiletto Challenge,” a pose trend inspired by Nicki Minaj’s “High School” music video. News reports say she was balancing in stilettos on household objects atop a kitchen counter when she fell backward. The reported injury was serious, but accounts of her condition are limited to statements and contemporaneous reporting from 2025.
What happened to Mariana Barutkina?
PerthNow reported on August 5, 2025, that Barutkina, 32, lived in Yekaterinburg and attempted the challenge about eight weeks after giving birth. According to PerthNow and The Daily Dot, she wore stilettos and balanced on a baby-food jar placed on a saucepan on a kitchen counter. She fell backward off the counter. PerthNow’s account and The Daily Dot’s report describe the setup.
Barutkina’s reported caption, translated into English by PerthNow, said: “I decided to start a blog, my first content shoot — and here I am leaving the doctor’s with a diagnosis.” She added: “Irony? Karma? Or just life, which always tests our strength at the most unexpected moment.”
What injury was reported?
News reports described a compression-flexion fracture. N+ reported on August 6, 2025, that Barutkina said a Moscow clinic diagnosed a compression-flexion fracture of the T9 vertebra. The Daily Dot quoted her Instagram caption’s English rendering as “The compression bending uncomplicated fracture of the body.” These are descriptions attributed to Barutkina or other reporting; the reports do not provide an independently reviewed medical record. What is the Nicki Minaj Stiletto Challenge?
The challenge takes inspiration from a crouching pose in Nicki Minaj’s “High School” music video. The Daily Dot characterized an earlier form as doing the pose with both feet on the ground, with some participants later elevating their heels on precarious objects. That is the outlet’s description of how the trend developed, not a verified history of every version posted online. The reports do not suggest that Minaj endorsed the stunt or that the video itself caused Barutkina’s fall.
Did Mariana Barutkina recover?
Contemporaneous coverage reported that later tests found no neurological damage and that surgery was not immediately needed, with medical supervision planned. The Daily Dot quoted a follow-up post in which Barutkina said she was doing well and following guidelines: “People, thank you for your popularity, for your concerns and for your comments,” and “I’m doing great, following the guidelines and now living in ‘star’ status.” These were translated quotations from her social posts. They do not establish her long-term or current medical condition.

What the incident does—and does not—show
This was one reported fall during a social-media stunt. It is not evidence that the song or artist caused the injury, and the available reports do not establish how often challenge attempts result in injuries. The reported combination of high heels, stacked household objects and a kitchen counter created an unstable setup; the incident should not be treated as a safe way to recreate the pose.
