Maria Sharapova has spoken publicly about gender equality in tennis, but the clearest documented remarks are from a 2023 conference—not a current policy platform or formal advocacy role. Her comments are best understood alongside her career as a champion and her work beyond the court.
What Sharapova said about gender equality
At the 2023 Unmatched conference, Sharapova discussed the continuing fight for gender equality in tennis. Tennis Canada’s account also says she spoke about wanting to learn about the future of sport and business. These are conference remarks reported at the time; they do not amount to a published reform program or establish that she holds an advocacy office today. Tennis Canada’s report is the clearest direct account of her comments on the issue.
That distinction matters when interpreting public figures’ comments on equality. The report establishes that Sharapova discussed the subject, but it does not specify a proposal, timetable, or a current position on particular policies. It also provides no comparable measure of a gender pay gap across Grand Slams, WTA Tour events, and ITF competition, whose prize structures and contexts differ.
What she has said about tennis’s future
At the same 2023 conference, Sharapova expressed interest in learning about the future of sport and business. The available account does not set out a detailed vision for how tennis should change. It would therefore be misleading to attribute a specific agenda—on governance, competition formats, player pay, or other reforms—to her on this evidence.

Her broader career does provide context for why sport and business appear together in her public story. In a 2018 interview covered by the WTA, she said, “What drives me to achieve is the desire to get better and to improve.” On developing business ideas, she described the process as collaborative: “It’s a really long process – it takes a large team to create those ideas…I’m a relationships person.” Those are historical remarks, not a statement of her current business activity or a blueprint for tennis’s future. The WTA’s 2018 coverage attributes the interview to Entrepreneur.
Career achievements behind her public platform
Sharapova announced her retirement in February 2020. The International Tennis Federation reported five Grand Slam titles, 40 professional titles, 36 WTA-level titles, and 21 weeks ranked world No. 1. The WTA later recorded her silver medal in women’s singles at the London 2012 Olympics and her induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2025. The ITF’s retirement report quotes her announcement: “Tennis showed me the world— and it showed me what I was made of,” and, “It’s how I tested myself and how I measured my growth.”

WTA materials describe Sharapova’s post-playing chapter as including business ventures and charitable work. The WTA profile identifies the Maria Sharapova Foundation and notes her former role as a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador. Those references establish part of her public history; they do not confirm that either affiliation is active now. The WTA profile and WTA retirement coverage provide that background.
