It has not been independently established. Other accounts differ: Ukraine’s foreign ministry relayed Dubai police’s preliminary view that she likely fell at a restricted construction site, while Kovalchuk later described threats and an assault in her own account. The available reporting does not resolve the discrepancy.
What happened to Maria Kovalchuk in Dubai?
Kovalchuk was admitted to a Dubai medical facility on 12 March 2025, according to Ukraine’s foreign ministry. The ministry said the Ukrainian consulate received her mother’s missing-person request on 20 March. In an account reported by BBC News Ukrainian, the ministry said local police had preliminarily concluded she likely sustained her injuries in a fall from height at a restricted construction site, and that authorities had opened a criminal investigation. This was a preliminary police view relayed by the ministry, not a final finding by a court.
BBC News Ukrainian’s 22 March 2025 report describes the ministry’s account. It does not establish exactly how Kovalchuk was injured.
What is the “Russian abuse twist”?
On 13 May 2025, PerthNow reported an allegation from an unnamed source described as close to Kovalchuk: that Russian citizens had tortured her. The report did not identify the alleged perpetrators or provide independent corroboration. The claim should therefore be treated as an anonymous-source allegation—not as a verified account of who injured her or what happened.

ZAXID.NET reported on 22 July that Ukrainian police had opened a human-trafficking case. That reported case is distinct from the preliminary fall explanation attributed to Dubai police. The existence of an investigation does not establish the allegations as fact. ZAXID.NET’s report and RBC’s 21 July coverage recount the interview and related details.
How the accounts compare
| Account | Source and timing | What it says | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preliminary police explanation | Ukraine’s foreign ministry, reported by BBC News Ukrainian on 22 March 2025 | Local police had preliminarily concluded she likely fell from height at a restricted construction site. | The ministry’s account of police’s preliminary view; not a final adjudication. |
| Russian torture allegation | Unnamed source quoted in PerthNow on 13 May 2025 | Russian citizens tortured Kovalchuk. | An anonymous allegation; the report did not name alleged perpetrators or independently corroborate it. |
| Kovalchuk’s later account | Interview published 21 July 2025; covered by RBC and ZAXID.NET | She described threats, escaping, hiding, and being assaulted. | Her account of events, not independent proof of each detail. |
These accounts are not equivalent kinds of evidence: one is a preliminary explanation attributed to police through a government ministry, one is an allegation from an unnamed source, and one is Kovalchuk’s own account. The reporting cited here does not establish how the accounts relate to one another or resolve the cause of her injuries.
