After Margot Kidder died, her family said the experience had been difficult for her daughter, Maggie McGuane, and asked the public to respect their privacy. In a statement relayed by McGuane’s husband, Chad Franscoviak, the family said she would not comment publicly until the Park County Coroner’s findings were released.
What the family said after Kidder’s death
In an Associated Press report published May 17, 2018, Franscoviak spoke on behalf of the family: “The experience has been difficult for her and she is choosing not to make public comment until after the findings of the Park County Coroner’s office have been released. We ask that you respect our family’s privacy during this sad time.” Read the Associated Press report republished by KSL.com.

The statement followed reports that McGuane had been taken to her mother’s home by the Park County Coroner and Livingston Police Department after Kidder’s death. The family’s request was for privacy while the coroner’s findings were pending; it did not provide a cause of death.
What was known about the cause of death at first
Kidder died at age 69 at her home in Livingston, Montana. In its initial report on May 14, 2018, the Associated Press said her manager described her death as peaceful and that no cause or further details were then available. Kidder was widely known for playing Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in Superman (1978) and three sequels. Read the Associated Press report republished by CBS Minnesota.

What later reporting said about the coroner’s findings
A later account by The Independent, published July 9, 2025, reported that the Park County coroner ruled Kidder’s death a self-inflicted drug and alcohol overdose. This information came after the family’s 2018 statement, which said McGuane would wait for the coroner’s findings; it was not part of the initial death report or the family’s first public comment. In the same 2025 retrospective, The Independent quoted McGuane as saying, “It’s a big relief that the truth is out there.” She also said, “It’s important to be open and honest so there’s not a cloud of shame in dealing with this.” These were later comments attributed to McGuane, not part of the family’s 2018 statement.
