Manga usually means comics from Japan, manhwa comics from Korea, and manhua comics from China. The main distinction is their cultural and publishing origin—not a guaranteed art style, color scheme, or reading direction. Those features can offer clues, but the specific book or app edition is the best guide to how a work is presented.

What do manga, manhwa, and manhua mean?

In ordinary English-language usage, the three words distinguish related comics traditions by cultural context: manga is associated with Japan, manhwa with Korea, and manhua with China. The terms share East Asian linguistic history, but they are not interchangeable labels for one format.

Origin is more useful than appearance when identifying a work. Scholarship on comics and publishing notes that “manga” can also be used outside Japan as a style or market category, so a manga-like look alone does not establish where a comic was created or first published. Creator, original publication context, and edition information are better clues. University of Toronto Press, How Comics Travel: Publication, Translation, Radical Literacies

How do they compare?

Term Common English association Frequent format tendency What not to assume
Manga Japanese comics Print editions commonly read right to left; many familiar print editions are black and white. Not every manga edition is monochrome or printed: manga also appears digitally and in color.
Manhwa Korean comics Print editions are often left to right; many contemporary digital webtoons use vertical scrolling and color. Manhwa is not synonymous with webtoon. Print and other formats exist.
Manhua Chinese comics Formats vary, including horizontal and digital presentations. There is no single reading direction to assume across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, publishers, and editions.

These are common patterns, not rules that define the terms. A publisher glossary likewise identifies the national associations and notes that manhua formats vary. Penguin Random House Comics, “East Asian Comics Glossary,” Spring 2026

Can reading direction, color, or style identify the tradition?

Reading direction is a clue, not a definition

Japanese print manga commonly preserves right-to-left page order. Korean print comics are often left to right, while many digital webtoons are designed for vertical scrolling. Manhua varies by edition. Translations and reprints can also change presentation, so follow the reading instructions in the copy you have rather than relying on a general convention.

Color and layout vary

Black-and-white print manga and full-color digital comics are familiar publishing patterns, but neither is universal. A work’s label does not tell you whether your edition is monochrome, color, paginated, or built for a scrolling screen.

Art style and genre do not settle origin

Visual similarities can cross borders, and genres do not map neatly to one tradition. Romance, action, fantasy, or other themes cannot reliably tell you whether a work is manga, manhwa, or manhua. Check who created it, where it first appeared, and how the publisher identifies that edition.

How should you choose what to read?

Start with the story and the reading experience you want, rather than treating one label as a genre. If page order matters to you, or you prefer scrolling to page turns, check the specific edition’s instructions and format.

  • For cultural or publishing origin: look for creator, original publisher, and first publication context.
  • For reading direction: follow the edition’s printed instructions or the app’s layout.
  • For color and format: check the actual print or digital edition; do not infer them from the label.
  • For a recommendation: name the work and edition, since translations and presentations may differ.

What about “webtoon”?

Webtoon describes a digital comics format commonly associated with vertical scrolling; it is not another national-origin label equivalent to manga, manhwa, or manhua. Many contemporary Korean digital comics use the format, but a manhwa can also be printed or presented another way. When discussing a particular title, distinguish its tradition or origin from the format of the edition you are reading.
