Why Manga Rock shut down
Manga Rock was described by its operator as a scanlation aggregator. Co-founder Hieu Tr. Tran said the team chose to close it while working toward a platform built on permission and contracts with creators and publishers. Keeping Manga Rock running, he explained, made it harder to establish trust with publishers. In an April 24, 2020 interview, Tran put it plainly: “The biggest barrier between us and the industry is trust.” He also acknowledged the cost of the decision: “Yes, we will lose a lot of users.” Source: interview with Hieu Tr. A contemporaneous report says the app was removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play in September 2019, and that the website stopped offering reading features by April 21, 2020. The report reproduced a Manga Rock notice saying title pages would direct readers to official content providers, including Comixology and VIZ. What INKR inherited—and what it did not
INKR Comics was announced in October 2020 as a digital comics service carrying manga and other comics from publishers and distributors including Kodansha and TOKYOPOP. The transition was not a seamless migration of Manga Rock’s full experience. At launch, INKR had less content and fewer features than users associated with Manga Rock. More importantly for former users, INKR’s help center says Manga Rock reading history and favorites cannot be transferred. What the 2020 Manga Rock alternatives list can—and cannot—tell you
A report updated April 21, 2020 reproduced community-sourced suggestions: MangaDex and Mangasee for desktop, Tachiyomi for Android, Mangazone for iOS, and offline reader tools. These names document what readers discussed at the time, not a current recommendation list. That distinction matters: a site or app appearing in an old alternatives list does not show that it is an official or legally equivalent replacement for Manga Rock. The operator’s stated direction was toward permission-based relationships with publishers and creators.
