Manga usually means Japanese comics, manhwa Korean comics, and manhua Chinese comics. A webtoon, by contrast, is a digital comics format—typically designed for vertical scrolling on a smartphone—not another name for manhwa. These labels overlap in practice, but they describe different things.
How manga, manhwa, manhua and webtoons differ
The first three terms commonly identify comics by national or cultural tradition. “Webtoon” identifies a digital format associated with South Korea that is now used by creators in many countries. The distinctions below are broad conventions, not rules that identify every work or edition. Penguin Random House Comics Retail’s glossary, published August 8, 2023, summarizes the terms this way:

|---|---|---|
| Manga | Japanese comics | Often read right to left. |
| Manhwa | Korean comics | Often read left to right. Many are formatted for vertical digital reading; some are adapted for print. |
| Manhua | Chinese comics | Reading direction varies; it may be left to right or right to left. |
| Webtoon | A digital comics format associated with South Korea and used internationally | Typically arranged for vertical scrolling on smartphones. |
Is a webtoon the same as manhwa?
No. Manhwa refers to Korean comics; webtoon refers to a digital presentation format. Many Korean comics are webtoons, but the terms are not interchangeable: creators from other countries also make webtoons, and not every Korean comic uses the vertical-scroll format.
Can manga, manhwa and manhua be printed or digital?
Yes. A comics tradition and a way of reading it are separate considerations. Manhwa, for example, may be created for vertical digital reading and later adapted for print. A printed edition does not stop being manhwa, just as reading a comic on a screen does not by itself make it a webtoon. The terms do not establish that every digital work will receive a print edition.

Does reading direction identify the type of comic?
It can offer a clue, but it is not a dependable test on its own. Manga is generally described as right-to-left, manhwa as left-to-right, and manhua as varying in direction. Editions, layouts and translations can differ, so follow the panels and any publisher guidance in the copy you are reading rather than assuming a direction from the label.

Color or visual style is not enough to determine whether a comic is manga, manhwa or manhua. The distinctions here concern comics tradition or format; they do not establish universal color rules or a single art style for any category.
