The double amputee also went on the show to offer the kind of example she says she lacked as a young woman: someone pursuing the outdoors after limb loss, even when the way forward looks different.
Who is Mandy Horvath?
Horvath grew up hunting, foraging and fishing, according to KRDO’s March 6, 2025, report. She said she was hit by a coal train in Nebraska in 2014. She also said she believed she had been drugged, but had no memory of what happened; that suspicion is her account, not an established finding.
In an interview with PEOPLE republished by AOL on March 7, 2025, Horvath was described as the first double-amputee survivor of Naked and Afraid and the first female bilateral amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Those distinctions are reported by the interview, rather than independently established here.
What was her Naked and Afraid challenge?
A 21-day jungle survival challenge
The Season 18 premiere, scheduled for March 9, 2025, paired Horvath with Army veteran Jonny Yates for a 21-day challenge in Belize, TV Insider reported. Studio 809’s episode discussion identifies the episode as “No Legs, No Problem.”
#1 Best Overall
Horvath described the physical strain in her interview with PEOPLE: bugs, exhaustion and nausea she attributed to eating too few calories. She also told the outlet that a leaf-cutter ant bit her shortly before she met her partner. The details describe her experience on the show, not a general account of how every participant—or every amputee—would respond.
Practical concerns she described
Horvath spoke about practical concerns she faced as a woman with no legs. She said production allowed wipes and that she used tampons during the challenge to reduce dirt and debris. These were personal choices in that setting, not medical advice or recommendations for other people.
How did Horvath prepare?
Horvath told TV Insider she trained for six months after learning the destination, researching Belize’s ecosystems, plants and animals, and practicing bushcraft and primitive tool-making. KRDO also reported that she used flashcards, practiced fire-making and worked on tanning. These were elements of her preparation; the accounts do not establish a universal preparation plan for adaptive outdoor activities.
Why did she want to take part?
Horvath connected her appearance to visibility. She said that after becoming a young amputee, she did not see women in media doing the outdoor activities she wanted to pursue. “As a young amputee, I had nobody to look up to,” she told KRDO. In the same report, she said, “I’m trying to show people the capability of their own body.”

The interview described the challenge as “her Everest,” and Horvath said, “This position does come with a lot of pressure, but I do take it very seriously. It’s deeply personal to me.”
That sense of responsibility extended beyond the episode. Horvath told PEOPLE she sent a video message to a 14-year-old paraplegic girl and said, “It’s important to me that young women that find themselves in these traumatic situations have something to hold onto.” Her aim was to give viewers an example and encouragement; her individual experience does not mean one approach will suit every amputee or person with a disability.

In a 2026 interview with ABILITY Magazine, Horvath reflected on the experience in her own words: “I survived 21 days Naked and Afraid in the Belizean jungle.” That later account reinforces the distinction at the center of her story: the challenge involved demanding, specific adaptations, while the reason she took it on was also to make outdoor possibility more visible to young women and amputees.
