Man of Tomorrow, James Gunn’s sequel to Superman, is scheduled to reach theaters on July 9, 2027. Gunn has described its central setup as Superman and Lex Luthor having to cooperate against a much greater threat; TheWrap identified that threat as Brainiac, with Lars Eidinger reported to play the villain. The detailed plot has not been disclosed.
What is the plot of Man of Tomorrow?
The confirmed broad premise is an uneasy Superman–Lex Luthor team-up. In a September 10, 2025 report about Gunn’s appearance on The Howard Stern Show, TheWrap quoted the filmmaker describing “a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.” (TheWrap)
That wording establishes cooperation, but not its exact terms: it does not say how the two characters come to work together, how long the arrangement lasts, or whether they share goals beyond facing the threat. It is not a full synopsis.
Who is the villain?
TheWrap reported on November 13, 2025 that Brainiac is the film’s larger threat and described the Superman–Lex alliance as temporary. Variety Australia reported on May 8, 2026 that Lars Eidinger plays Brainiac. (TheWrap; Variety Australia)
